The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends the following if you're expecting an increased risk of ultraviolet?ray (UV) exposure this spring break:Stay in the shade, especially between 10am?and 4pm.Wear clothing to protect skin and a hat that covers your face, neck, and ears.Drink plenty of water throughout the day.Use sunscreen with proper technique reapply when necessary.Avoid indoor tanning before your trip. Take precaution when swimming in areas that aren't marked.Swim with others if possible! Especially if there isn't a lifeguard present, this can really reduce potential risks. If you are stuck in a rip current, swim parallel to the shore until the current ends. In attempts to keep ourselves safe from the sun's harmful rays with sunscreen, we can harm the ecosystem around us. In doing so, we can ultimately hurt ourselves, water sources, and the planet as a whole. Marine species are under increasing stress from climate disruption and harmful chemicals released from sunscreen.?Hawaii?has already taken steps to limit the amount of harmful chemicals released into the beautiful ecosystem by regulating sunscreen brands available for purchase in the state. Utilizing reef safe sunscreens for all of your adventures in the spring and summer, if it economically feasible and available for you,?can help to ensure natural bodies of water are enjoyable for many more generations.
