GALATIANS Chapter 6 Obeying the Law, Living under Grace

Homework for May 14, 2019

As we come to the conclusion of Paul's letter to the churches in Galatia, we have learned how Paul insists that these believers comprehend the importance of understanding their salvation is a gift from God and living is by His grace. While adherence to the Law will not save them, the spirit of the Law on their hearts is even more demanding. Motivation for obedience is love for God and love for others.

DAY ONE Galatians 6:1-5 Fulfilling the Law

Because of false teaching, some believers had been led away from truth. What is to be done?

Paul instructs them concerning those who had been caught in a __________________.

Who is to take action? Those who are __________________. How would those persons be identified?

Gal. 5:16 ____________________________________________________________________

Eph. 5:18-20 __________________________________________________________________

Col. 3:16 _____________________________________________________________________

Gal. 5:22-23 ___________________________________________________________________

What is the goal for correcting the offender? Gal. 6:1 ________________________________________

2 Tim. 2:25 __________________________________________________________________

How is that to be done? (from both verses above)___________________________________________

What is the danger? ___________________________________________________________________

The law of Christ is loving one another as He loves us. That means to bear one another's burdens.

How would you define a burden? __________________________________________________

In v. 5, believers are told to bear his own load? Define "load": ___________________________

In v. 3-4, Paul addresses the issue of comparing oneself to others. In the context of correcting another believer and offering assistance, what should be done? _______________________________________

How did Jesus teach the same principle in Matt. 7:1-5? _______________________________________

______________________________________________________________________________

DAY TWO Love expressed among believers

In addition to bearing one another's burdens and gently restoring those who stray, there are other Scriptures which instruct believers in how to express love for one another. Let's look at a few:

Mark 9:50 ________________________________________________________________________

Rom. 12:10 ________________________________________________________________________

Rom. 14:13 ________________________________________________________________________

Rom. 14:19 ________________________________________________________________________

Rom. 15:5 ________________________________________________________________________

1 Cor. 12:25 ________________________________________________________________________

Gal. 5:13 ________________________________________________________________________

Eph. 4:2 ________________________________________________________________________

Eph. 4:32 ________________________________________________________________________

Eph. 5:21 ________________________________________________________________________

Phil. 2:3 ________________________________________________________________________

Col. 3:9 ________________________________________________________________________

Col. 3:13 ________________________________________________________________________

1 Thes. 4:18 ________________________________________________________________________

1 Thes. 5:13 ________________________________________________________________________

Heb. 3:13 ________________________________________________________________________

Heb. 10:24 ________________________________________________________________________

James 5:9 ________________________________________________________________________

James 5:16 ________________________________________________________________________

1 Pet. 4:9 ________________________________________________________________________

1 Pet. 4:10 ________________________________________________________________________

1 John 1:7 ________________________________________________________________________

1 John 4:11 ________________________________________________________________________

If this list seems is too long or too demanding, perhaps we can just pick any five and practice them!

DAY THREE Galatians 6:6-10 Doing good

We must learn how to live pleasing to God. To ensure that believers mature in the faith, God sent His Holy Spirit to live within each one, preserved His word through the ages, and sent evangelists and teachers. Teachers have the privilege to bring God's word, to set an example, and to understand both the privilege and responsibility of faithfully presenting truth as revealed by God. It is a huge responsibility which comes with a stricter judgment. James 3:1

What does Paul instruct believers concerning their relationship with their teachers?

______________________________________________________________________________

Paul often worked to earn his living while bringing the gospel and sound doctrine to the churches. He never demanded payment, charged fees, or sold copies of his letters for support. In 1 Cor. 9:14, Paul presented a principle to be observed: ______________________________________________________

______________________________________________________________________________

In Gal. 6:7-8, Paul reminds them of a proverb (not a promise). In his letter to the church at Corinth,

2 Cor. 9:6-7, Paul had referred to this proverb in the context of _________________________________

In Gal. 6:8, Paul refers to two crops consistent with what is sown:

sowing to the flesh yields ________________; sowing to the Spirit yields __________________

Gal. 6:9-10. According to this verse, what may be true of the harvest (reaping)?

______________________________________________________________________________

However, it is important not to ______________________ in doing good.

To whom should we do good? All ______________, but especially _____________________________

DAY FOUR Galatians 6:11-17 Motives

Paul states that his letter has been written __________________________. Letters were often dictated, Rom. 16:22, but in closing several letters Paul indicated he wrote himself. 1 Cor. 16:21, 2 Thes. 3:17, Col. 4:18 The reference to "large letters" could have been a reference to his writing style.

v. 12-13 The Judaizers were influencing believers by what method? ____________________________

How would the "cross of Christ" be in contrast to "circumcision"?

_____________________________________________________________________________

How might verse 13 be an example of "misery loves company"?

_____________________________________________________________________________

v.14 Paul has pointed out that those who insist on the Law don't even keep it themselves, especially since Paul has proven from Scriptures that the Law cannot save. Paul is insistent about what is superior and worthy of boasting: the ______________ of our ____________________________________.

This theme of boasting in Christ was also part of Paul's letter to the church at Corinth. 1 Cor. 1:29-31

How is a believer described in 2 Cor. 5:17? ________________________________________________

What did Paul declare in Gal. 2:20? ______________________________________________________

_____________________________________________________________________________

in Col. 3:3? ______________________________________________________________________

Paul declares this a stark contrast to those who would pridefully insist on the Law and aggrandize themselves.

Back to Gal. 6:16 Paul refers to walking by this "rule". Summarize the rule of life which Paul has given in v. 14-15: __________________________________________________________________________

What blessings accompany this rule? ____________________ and ______________________

Here Paul referred to the church as the "Israel of God". How would that be consistent with what he had written to them earlier in Gal. 3:29? ________________________________________________

Paul appeals to them to show him mercy by not ___________________________ for him.

How are we to understand Paul's reference to bearing the "brand-marks of Jesus"?

_____________________________________________________________________________

DAYFIVE Galatians 6:18 A benediction

In his final closing words of this letter, Paul once again mentions the superiority of grace.

Benedictions are recorded throughout Scripture. A benediction is a "good word" or a blessing.

In an earlier lesson we looked at the great Aaron's priestly blessing from Num. 6:23-26.

The LORD bless you, and keep you;

The LORD make His face shine on you, And be gracious to you;

The LORD lift up His countenance on you, And give you peace.

There are many benedictions or blessings in the letters of the NT. Let's look at a few:

Rom. 15:5-6 Now may the God who gives _________________ and ________________ grant you to be of the same mind with one another according to Christ Jesus, so that with one accord you may with one voice _________ the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Rom.15:13 Now may the God of ________ fill you with all _________ and ___________ in believing, so that you will abound in ________ by the ________ of the Holy Spirit.

2 Cor. 13:14 The ___________ of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the __________ of God, and the

__________________ of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

Eph. 6:23-24 _________ be to the brethren, and __________ with __________, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. ___________ be with all those who ________ our Lord Jesus Christ with ___________________ love.

Phil. 1:9-11 And this I pray, that your _________ may abound still more and more in real ______________and all _____________________ so that you may approve the things that are excellent in order to be __________________ and ________________ until the day of Christ; having been filled with the _________ of __________________ which comes through Jesus Christ, to the ____________ and _____________ of God.

1 Thes. 3:12-13 May the Lord cause you to increase and abound in ___________ for one another, and for all people, just as we also do for you; so that He may establish your ______________ without _________ in _______________ before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all His ______________.

Heb. 13:20-21 Now the God of ___________, who brought up from the dead the great Shepherd of the sheep through the blood of the _________________ covenant, even Jesus our Lord, equip you in every good thing to ____________________, working in us that which is______________ in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen!

Now, look back over the words you have written and thank the Lord for your blessings.
