III. It’s IMPORTANT AND WIDELY USED (contrary to common belief)
1. More Europeans speak German at home as their primary language than English, Spanish or French.
2. Roughly 30% of all international firms in North Carolina come from German speaking countries
(Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein).

Austria, or Switzerland and find or draw a picture of it.
IV. It’s INSPIRING.
1. You will want to v i s i t these most beautiful German places some day:
the Alps, the Black Forest, Munich and the Oktoberfest, and the numerous medieval castles have been favorite vacation spots of Americans for centuries. Americans are usually the largest non-European group to visit Germany (and you always find a lot of Germans visiting the US).
2. You will increase your k n o w l e d g e of essential cultural, social, and political changes in Europe (Reformation, World War I and II, Third Reich, Holocaust, Communism and the Fall of the Wall, NATO, the European Union and its currency, the Euro).
3. You will get more insight into our l o c a l h e r i t a g e. German is the language of the people that founded Old Salem, the Moravians. There is an amazing archive there of historic reports and life stories in German. It is also the language of the Triad German Club which holds German traditions alive in our area with cultural programs and a big „Oktoberfest“.

V. PERSONAL GAIN
Taking German sharpens all of your mental skills, and helps you do better on the SAT and the English Writing Test. It was ranked second after Latin. You can take German all through high school: German 1, 2, 3, 4 and AP (a few students have taken German 5). The first two years are at Reynolds, and the upper classes are taught at the Career Center. German classes are usually small, and you don’t have to contend with a different teacher every year. You can get credit toward the National Honor Society for being a member or an officer of the German Club. Most colleges in North Carolina have good German programs and all require two years of a foreign language. The best universities, however, recommend three to four. As a science or math major, they will look for a reading knowledge of German, not just 2-4 years of any foreign language. Beside good classes and a good club, the German program offers participation in the state wide German Day competition, the NC German Weekend, the Friendship Connection Exchange Program, and other educational events in German on the state and national level: for instance, Geothe Institute Award of Excellence, Deutsches Sprachdiplom, AATG National German Exam, and Bundestag Congress Youth Exchange.

VI. HOW TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN GERMAN
1. Be prepared and stay on task during class!
Come with an open mind, a positive attitude and a sense for adventure and curiosity. Have pencil, paper, book, homework, and other required materials ready for class when the bell rings. Listen and imitate the foreign sounds as accurately as possible. Don’t worry about feeling odd at first. If you don’t feel weird you are still speaking English. Don’t be concerned if you don’t understand right away. There will be lots of repetition until everyone understands.
2. Be conscientious about assigned homework and your individual progress in general!
Maintain thorough and consistent study habits, allowing at least 20-30 minutes daily for German assignments. There are no assignments on Fridays or before holidays but review is strongly recommended. I also encourage you to read the sections of the book that we cannot cover in class. For easier correction, assignments need to be in pencil and for longer written work, you need to skip lines. If you feel like you are getting behind and need some help tell me right away. I encourage you to get a family member or friend to help you memorize, and to use the new language outside of the classroom as much as possible. When you were absent, show me your excuse note and check for make-up work immediately. Make-up work has to be completed in two days following the absence, and that includes tests and quizzes. However, you can make up or retake any work for a lesser grade any time before the end of a quarter. I don’t want anyone to give up on learning and improving themselves.

3. Be punctual and always attend!
Tardiness will result in you missing the very important warm-up and review period. You will feel lost and insecure and your participation grade will suffer greatly. I will give two warnings but after the third tardy, the student needs to stay with me after school for 30 minutes, and the parents are being informed. If a student keeps being tardy or skips my class, he will be disciplined according to school rules. Going to the bathroom or anywhere else during instructional time is not permitted. I only allow it in emergencies, which means no more than once a month. You need to record when you leave and when you come back on a sheet in front of the door.
4. Be respectful to your classmates, the teacher, and the school property!
I do not tolerate disrespectful talk or behavior. They constitute what I refer to as “social pollution”, and they will have an effect on your participation grade. For serious offenses, after two warnings, the student needs to stay after school with me for 30 minutes, and the parents are informed. After more than three offenses, the student is referred to an administrator.
5. Ask the teacher for help early and often if you feel you did not understand!
