Drugs for the Reproductive System

-Disorders of the reproductive system

-Vaginal infections- A variety of vaginal douches, creams, tablets, and suppositories are available that have antibacterial and antifungal actions. Some examples of topical preparations are miconazole and clotrimazole. The oral medication of choice for treating trichomoniasis is metronidazole. The treatment for endometriosis is use of hormonal medications to control symptoms; examples of this drug are danazol, nafarelin, and lupron depot.

-Sexually transmitted diseases- is infectious diseases associated with sexual contact.

-HIV- use of antiretroviral drugs to block transcriptase; examples of this drug are zidovudine, didanosine, zalcitabine, and stavudine.

-Herpes simplex- there is no cure; treatment for flare-ups is acyclovir.

-Venereal warts- treatment consists of use of trichloroacetic acid or podophyllin.

-Syphilis- treatment consists of parenteral penicillin.

-Gonorrhea- treatment consists of ceftriaxone.

-Chlamydial infections- treated with tetracycline, doxycycline, or azithromycin.

-Prostate diseases

-Prostatitis- inflammation of the prostate. Treatment consists of antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, and measures to promote comfort.

-Benign prostatic hyperplasia or hypertrophy (BPH)- new growth of epithelial and stromal elements within the prostate gland. The following medications can be used finasteride, tamsulosin, terazosin, prazosin, or doxazosin.

-Infertility- Treatments can range from clomiphene, human chorionic gonadotropin, or menotrpins.

-Use of sex hormones in drug therapy

-Estrogen- is used to replace female hormones. Examples are estradiol, estrone, and conjugated estrogens.

-Progesterone- acts in partnership with estrogen. Examples are medroxyprogesterone acetate and megestrol.

-Contraceptives- is a combination of estrogen and progestins. Some examples of this are depo-provera and norplant.

-Testosterone- primarily used in replacement of therapy for men when the testes are not producing enough hormone for proper development or sexual activity. Examples are methyltestosterone and fluoxymesterone.
