While it’s true that you may know you love them and they love you, showing signs of that love somehow keeps the love alive, makes the joy of it come to the surface. We are symbolic animals. What is language if not a set of elaborate signs, audible signs? You need only walk along the street and there will be signs to cross the road, signs for parking, signs for the train station. Signs and symbols often communicate meaning and feeling more than a thousand words. A movement of the eyebrow, a turn of the head, a gesture of the hand, conveys so much to others, especially to those nearest and dearest. The Lord has made us this way and he, too, communicates with us by means of signs. The seven sacraments are among the most sacred of signs, although they are more than just signs (“external signs of internal graces”). There is one sign more than any other which carries a wealth of significance, which expresses the love of the Trinity in no uncertain terms. It is the Sign of the Cross. With it we begin and end the most sacred act of divine worship, the Mass. We make it before and after praying. As we enter and leave our home, dipping our finger in holy water, we ask that love of the Trinity to be with us in our coming and going. It is the sign of blessing, a sign which marks not only our foreheads, breast and shoulders, but the depths of our Christian hearts and souls. Before you next make the Sign of the Cross, halt for a few seconds and consider what it means, what you are doing. Let it bring the power and blessing of the Trinity Itself and of the Cross upon your life and love.Opening Hymn (Largs): 908LITURGY OF THE WORDFirst Reading Ecclesiasticus 15:16-21This reading faces us with the drama of human freedom. God made us free but he gave us no permission to sin, that is, to misuse that freedom. He gave us freedom to choose the good, the right. Yet, it is not we who establish what is good and right, but the commandments of God. Freedom is true, is truly free, only when it chooses God’s will. Obedience to God is therefore true freedom. If you wish, you can keep the commandments, to behave faithfully is within your power. He has set fire and water before you; put out your hand to whichever you prefer. Man has life and death before him; whichever a man likes better will be given him. For vast is the wisdom of the Lord; he is almighty and all-seeing. His eyes are on those who fear him, he notes every action of man. He never commanded anyone to be godless, he has given no one permission to sin.Ps. 118: They are happy who follow God’s law.Second Reading 1 Corinthians 2:6-10We cannot properly understand the things of God or God’s vision of the world and the human race unless by the gift of the Spirit. A mathematician as a mathematician will understand little of a love poem. Only the love and poet in him will grasp the poem. The wisdom of God is not susceptible to, and even less subject to, human philosophy or science. The ocean does not fit into a thimble. Even less can the things of God be grasped by the human mind alone. Understanding the truth of God is as much God’s gift as is the truth itself. We ask for that gift with humility and faith. We have a wisdom to offer those who have reached maturity: not a philosophy of our age, it is true, still less of the masters of our age, which are coming to their end. The hidden wisdom of God which we teach in our mysteries is the wisdom that God predestined to be for our glory before the ages began. It is a wisdom that none of the masters of this age have ever known, or they would not have crucified the Lord of Glory; we teach what scripture calls:?the things that no eye has seen and no ear has heard, things beyond the mind of man, all that God has prepared for those who love him.??These are the very things that God has revealed to us through the Spirit, for the Spirit reaches the depths of everything, even the depths of God. Gospel Matthew 5:20-22,27-28,33-34,37Jesus said to his disciples: ‘I tell you, if your virtue goes no deeper than that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never get into the kingdom of heaven.??‘You have learnt how it was said to our ancestors:?You must not kill; and if anyone does kill he must answer for it before the court. But I say this to you: anyone who is angry with his brother will answer for it before the court.??‘You have learnt how it was said:?You must not commit adultery.?But I say this to you: if a man looks at a woman lustfully, he has already committed adultery with her in his heart.??‘Again, you have learnt how it was said to our ancestors:?You must not break your oath, but must fulfil your oaths to the Lord.?But I say this to you: do not swear at all. All you need say is “Yes” if you mean yes, “No” if you mean no; anything more than this comes from the evil one.’The Gospel of the Lord.SAINT MARY STAR OF THE SEA28 Greenock Road, Largs, KA30 8NEOUR LADY OF PERPETUAL SUCCOURCollege Street, Millport, KA28 0BGTel: 01475 740019. It means “take” or “accept” and it is directed to the Lord Jesus. I have always loved this prayer. I associate it with some strong moments of consolation when I did a long retreat under Jesuit guidance many years ago. But, my goodness, it’s a challenging prayer! Above, it was mentioned that the true meaning of freedom is obedience. To obey is to offer your freedom to the Lord as a gift. Do you, do I still, have the courage and the freedom to say this prayer sincerely? Here it is:Take, Lord, receive my freedom,My memory, my understanding,All I am and all I have. You have given all to me.Now I return itThat you may dispose of it as you will.Give me only your love and your grace. These are enough for me. I ask for nothing more.Eucharistic PrayerThe Paschal Mystery and the People of GodIt is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks,Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God,through Christ our Lord. For through his Paschal Mystery,he accomplished the marvellous deed,by which he has freed us from the yoke of sin and death, summoning us to the glory of being now calleda chosen race, a royal priesthood,a holy nation, a people for your own possession,to proclaim everywhere your mighty works, for you have called us out of darknessinto your own wonderful light. ….Communion AntiphonGod so loved the world that he gave his Only Begotten Son, so that all who believe in him may not perish, but may have eternal life. Many people often talk about the 2nd Vatican Council, but you might find that fewer have actually read its documents. A couple of sentences which made a profound impact on me when I read them years ago refer to the gift of the Eucharist. They are in the Council’s document on the life and ministry of the ordained priest: “The most holy Eucharist contains the Church’s entire spiritual wealth: Christ himself, our Passover and living bread. Through his own flesh, now made living and life-giving by the Holy Spirit, he offers life to men.”We know that food, properly eaten and digested, sustains our bodily life. It gives our bodies the nutrients which allow life itself to continue. Similarly, when we receive the Eucharist with proper disposition, the Lord Jesus, through his risen and ascended Body, imparts the “nutrient” of the Holy Spirit to our spirits. The Spirit makes our spirits capable of living with the life of God, eternal life. But the Spirit is not an impersonal substance, as if he were a spiritual carbohydrate. The Spirit’s divine person and power permeate and saturate our hearts and souls communicating to them the wisdom and truth, the grace and holiness proper to the Trinity itself. One father of the Church put it like this: holy communion “dei-fies” us, i.e. makes us God-like, divine. As you consume the host and drink from the chalice today, try to be aware in a simple fashion that you are being “invaded” by God. Might a fitting response be to say the “Suscipe” prayer opposite?Hymn for Communion (Largs): 872MARIAN ANTIPHON: Ave Regina Caelorum (n. 38b) at the 10am Mass only.Recessional Hymn (Largs): 812An elderly man is stopped by the police around 2 a.m. and is asked where he is going at this time of night. The man replies, "I am on my way to a lecture about alcohol abuse and the effects it has on the human body, as well as smoking and staying out late." The officer then asks, "Really? Who is giving that lecture at this time of night?"The man replies, "That would be my wife." ................
