PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

By Cathie Clinch

Mining Women - November is really here and I am writing this message by the fire and avoiding the rain outside!

Members and guests had an informative and tasty tour of the LuLu Island Winery on October 18th. They tasted wine (6 different types no less and had nibblies) and saw a video showing how ice wine is created. The tour was followed by a flavorful a la carte

lunch at the nearby Mayfair Lakes Golf and Country Club.

Our November outing will be on Thursday, the 17th for the popular Tea and Trumpets "From Russia with Love" concert featuring classical

pleasant afternoon of great music by the Vancouver Symphony. **** Please

note the day and date as it is not our usual Tuesday meeting.****

We will meet before hand at the Sala Thai Restaurant on Burrard Street, just a few blocks away from the Orpheum Theatre.

If you wish to attend, please contact Nancy Christopher as seating is becoming limited.

A Happy Thanksgiving on November 24th to our members who get to celebrate Thanksgiving twice!

Thank you to all for your support and involvement in our educational

activities throughout the year.

For something completely new… we are going to change things up and have an outing to the Vancouver Christmas Market, which for the first time will be held at the Jack Poole Plaza, 1055 Canada Place (the site of the Olympic Cauldron)

During your visit to the Vancouver Christmas Market you’ll experience a mix of traditional Christmas food and beverage, as well as a selection of authentic wood carvings and toys, knitted goods, nutcrackers, pottery and other unique gifts and ride Vancouver’s only Christmas Carousel.

Mining for Miracles Update!

By Toni Wallis

Over the past 3 years Mining for Miracles has directed their fundraising efforts towards a commitment to the CAUSES Research Clinic that provides genome-wide sequencing for BC children and families with complex undiagnosed disorders. The CAUSES Clinic was made possible by a $3-million commitment from Mining for Miracles during our 2015-2016 fundraising season. In 2016 we raised an astounding $1,677,686 for BC’S KIDS and surpassed our goal of $1-million for the year. Our commitment to the CAUSES clinic is now fulfilled and the Clinic is advancing with additional funding in place.

The Mining for Miracles Committee has been working with BCCH to find a new venture towards which we can direct our fundraising initiative for 2017-2018. The committee has selected TRACE as we believe it provides the best mix of direct patient benefits (children who will be helped immediately, particularly those with leukemia and kidney transplants) while also advancing research and helping position BCCH as a centre of excellence. It ALSO builds on the previous initiatives funded by Mining for Miracles particularly the Bio Bank and the Causes Clinic. The Funding request is for $2.9 million over the next 2 years.

What is TRACE? This program would establish a “Clinical Cell Therapy Facility” that would have the capacity to isolate a patient’s immune cells, add a gene that programs them to kill cancer cells, return them to the patient’s body and allow them to attach to the cancer and destroy it. Currently, B.C. patients seeking this therapy have to travel to the U.S. for treatment at a personal cost of tens of thousands of dollars. This initiative would build on M4M’s recent focus on genetic illness by genetically modifying a patient’s own cells to facilitate treatment. In addition the centre will immediately support kidney transplant patients by replacing regular biopsies with urine samples with a longer term goal of increasing the success rate of transplants.

The M4M Committee is still exploring how to best “brand” the initiative and tie it in with Mining for Miracles however we are moving forward with the fundraising planning. With this in mind, I am putting out an early reminder that we will need volunteers to sell Diamond Draw raffle tickets again at the AMEBC Mineral Exploration Roundup from January 23-26, 2017.

Once again, I have been asked co-ordinate this effort by the M4M Committee so SIGN UP NOW FOR YOUR FAVOURITE TIME SLOT. Contact Toni Wallis
