Dear Leader,

Thank you for ordering ministry resources for The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything ? A VeggieTales Movie. It is our hope that this kit will help you unpack the important lessons in this film for the children in your home, church and community.

Culture has a way of misrepresenting what it means to be a hero ? beauty, money, fame and power. We know that God's definition of a hero is far different than that. And as parents and teachers, it can be very difficult to counteract the constant barrage of messages to which our children are exposed. The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything ? A VeggieTales Movie aims to help children understand what it really means to be a hero and challenge them to do what is right even when it's hard. Through humor and creative storytelling, we strive to teach children that God has a plan for our lives including things "which God prepared in advance for us to do" Eph 2:10 (NIV). We trust the materials and ideas included in this kit will help you impact your community with this message and the good news that "God made you special and He loves you very much!"

Thank you for helping us impact the next generation of leaders with this timely lesson. We truly appreciate your partnership in this ministry!

Blessings, The Big Idea Family

"A hero isn't the tallest, or the bravest, or the smartest, or the best looking. A hero is the one who responds to God's call and trusts that God will give him what he needs. A hero is someone who does what's right even when it's really, really hard."

Garrrrr! Working at The Pieces of Ate Dinner Theater is less than exciting when you're a cabin boy. For three moping misfits--Elliot, Sedgewick, and George (Larry the Cucumber, Mr. Lunt, and Pa Grape)--all they dream of is the day when they can ditch their dishrags and take stage to star in the big pirate show. But with Elliot's timidity, Sedgewick's laziness and George's lack of self-confidence, it seems as if the day to prove who they really are will never come.

Things are about to change when a mysterious ball drops from the sky and lands at the unlikely seafarers' feet. The "Helpseeker"--an artifact sent from the past in search of heroes--sets in motion a series of events that drags the friends back to the 17th century and into the belly of certain danger. The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything must each face their fears . . . becoming unlikely heroes in a battle to rescue a royal family from an evil tyrant, and themselves from living the lives of common couch potatoes as they learn a valuable lesson in what it really means to be a hero.

On January 11, 2008, Universal Pictures and Big Idea will release a film of heroism and adventure on the high seas, The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything--A VeggieTales Movie. From the creators of 2002's wildly successful Jonah--A VeggieTales Movie comes a new story of the comic misadventures of three animated Veggie pals who reluctantly set sail for adventure and come to discover that real heroes don't have to be tall, strong, handsome...or even human!

Provided in this event kit are resources and tools to help generate excitement and enthusiasm in your church about the upcoming film, as well as materials to help you "unpack" the message of the movie for your children's ministry. We hope the ideas and activities that are included will be beneficial in getting everyone in your congregation on board for this inspiring adventure and help each child in your ministry understand that God has an adventure planned especially for them!

? "Heroic" Discussion Larry the Cucumber, Mr. Lunt and Pa Grape play three wanna-be pirates who are called into an adventure where they have to be real heroes. Princess Eliose's brother has been kidnapped. She called for help and the mysterious "helpseeker" picked the three Pirates Who Don't Do Anything to offer her assistance. Can they do what it takes to help the princess?

Use the following questions as discussion starters to speak with kids about the upcoming film.

? The three pirates in the movie don't exactly "look" like heroes . . . but how does a real hero look? ? What is a hero anyway? What makes a person a hero? ? Talk about heroes in the community. Who are some heroes of

the Bible? ? How can you be a hero?

AFTER THE FILM

After your church or group has seen the movie, encourage discussion and self-application as you walk through the biblical parallels and lessons to be learned from the show. Be mindful to alter your conversations and questions to age-appropriate levels.

WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT? Learning what it means to be a real hero and realizing that God calls us all for adventure is what The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything--A VeggieTales Movie is really about. What does it mean to be a hero? To what adventure do you feel called? Are there any special challenges in your life?

True heroes--the ones who truly make a difference--are those people who do what they know is right, no matter how difficult it is. The way you live your life can make you a hero.

WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS Use the following verses to spark discussion about how God has made each of us unique and has a plan for us. ? "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you

and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV) ? "We are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." Ephesians 2:10 (NIV) ? "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart." Jeremiah 1:5 (NIV) ? "Those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God." Roman 8:14 (NIV) ? "Come, follow me," Jesus said. "and I will make you fishers of men." Mark 1:17 (NIV)

APPLICATION How did the Pirates Who Don't Do Anything become heroes?

? When Eloise called the misfit trio "heroes," Elliot was flattered and convinced Sedgewick and George to grab the opportunity to do what they had always wanted to do . . . find adventure and become heroes. Even being a "fake" hero sounded like a good idea. The first step to their becoming heroes was answering the call by agreeing to help Eloise--even though two of the pirates did so reluctantly.

? The pirates stayed committed to helping Eloise find Alexander and doing what was right. In the end, they became the real heroes that they had always longed to be.

Use the following questions for discussion and consideration of life application possibilities: ? Who are your heroes, and why do you consider them heroes? ? Besides the Pirates Who Don't Do Anything, who else do you think was heroic in the movie? ? Why wasn't Eloise afraid of her uncle, Robert the Terrible? ? Why do you think Robert the Terrible is so terrible? ? Do you think it's possible for Robert the Terrible to become a hero? ? Why did Eloise's father give her the "Helpseeker," and how did it help her? ? Alexander was very brave in a scary situation. Have you ever been faced with a scary situation? Where did you look for help? ? The King (Alexander and Eloise's father) said that his help was always there. How can someone be "always there?" Who is "always there" for us? ? How can you be a hero? ? How can you help others to be heroes?

WHAT CAN WE LEARN FROM THIS FILM? The three cabin boy pirates in the movie are leading less-than-exiting lives and are most unlikely heroes. What obstacles do they need to overcome?

? Elliot (Larry the Cucumber) is shy and afraid. o What kind of list does Elliot have? (A list of things that he is afraid of.)

? Sedgewick (Mr. Lunt) is lazy. o How do you know that Sedgewick is lazy? (He doesn't want to go to the back room to get barbecue sauce because it's too far. He invented a labor-saving device so he doesn't have to walk so much.)

? George (Pa Grape) lacks self-confidence. o Why was George "down in the dumps" after he spoke with his family at the beginning of the movie? (His children want to take a tour of the set with Sir Frederick instead of their father. Sir Frederick is their hero.)

A FINAL THOUGHT God has an adventure for each person. The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything didn't think they had much of a future at Pieces of Ate Restaurant, but God had plans for them of heroic proportions. And God has not left anyone out. . .YOU can be a hero, too! Find the adventure God has planned for you and be obedient to His call. He will give you all that you need to be a REAL hero. Challenge each child to think about opportunities they have to make the right choice and to do the right thing. Give the kids an opportunity to share their thoughts if they'd like. Award each child a hero certificate (available online at church) after sharing what they learned or what they want to do right.
