Determining Speed and Velocity

Determining Speed, Velocity & Acceleration

Name: ___________________________________________ Date: ______________Pd. _________

Speed is a measure of how fast an object is moving or traveling. Velocity is a measure of how fast an object is moving or traveling in a certain direction. Both speed and velocity include the distance traveled compared to the amount of time taken to cover this distance. Acceleration means a change in speed or direction. It can also be defined as a change in velocity per unit of time.

Calculate the answers to the following questions. Show all of your work. Include the formula, input the variables, solve and box your answer.

Speed

1. What is the velocity of a car that traveled a total of 75 Km north in 1.5 hours?

2. What is the velocity of a plane that traveled 3,000 miles from New York to California in 5.0 hours?

3. John took 45 minutes to bike to his grandmother’s house, a total of 4 km. What was his velocity in km/hr? In meters/ hour?

4. It took 3.5 hours for a train to travel the distance between two cities at a velocity of 120 mi/hour. How many miles lie between the two cities? What is this distance in km? ( 1 km = 0.62 miles)

5. How long would it take for a car to travel a distance of 200 km if it is traveling at a velocity of 55 km/hr?

6. A car is traveling at 100 km/hr. How many hours will it take to cover a distance of 750 km?

7. A plane traveled for about 2.5 hours at a velocity of 1200 km/hr. What distance did it travel?

8. A girl peddling her bike at a velocity of 0.10 km/min. How far will she travel in 2 hours?

9. An ant carries food at a speed of 1 cm/sec. How long will it take the ant to carry a cookie crumb from the kitchen table to the ant hill, a distance of 50m? Express your answer in seconds, minutes and hours.

10. The water in the Buffalo River flows at an average speed of 5 km/hr. If you and a friend decide to canoe down the river a distance of 16 km, how many hours and minutes will it take?

Acceleration

11. A rocket traveling at 400m/sec fires its booster rockets until the craft reaches 550 m/sec. If the boosters fire for 30 seconds, what was the acceleration of the rocket?

12. After applying its brakes, a car accelerates at a rate of -15m/sec/sec. If the car was traveling at a rate of 25 m/sec, how long will it take the car to stop?

13. What will be the final velocity of a boat leaving the dock at the Philadelphia Naval Station at .5m/sec/sec if it travels for 2 minutes?

14. A ball rolls down a ramp for 15 seconds. If the initial velocity of the ball was .8m/sec and the final velocity was 7m/sec, what was the acceleration of the ball?

15. A spacecraft reaches a speed of 250m/sec in 10 seconds after an acceleration of 15m/sec/sec occurs. What was the original velocity of the craft?

16. In 0.5 seconds, a bullet goes from 0 to 300 m/sec. What is the acceleration of the bullet?

17. A rocket changed velocity from 1.0 km/sec to 1.8 km/sec in .03 seconds. What is the acceleration of the rocket?

18. The space shuttle releases a space telescope into orbit around the Earth. The telescope goes from being stationary to traveling at a speed of 1700m/s in 25 seconds. What is the acceleration of the satellite?
