Sci20 Unit B: Physics - Speed, Velocity and Acceleration

Show all work, including starting formulas, substitutions, units and proper sig-digs to receive full marks.

1. A person walks 25 km (W), 6.0 km (S), 12 km (E) and 6.0 km (N). Determine the resultant displacement and resultant distance. (2 marks)

Displacement =

Distance =

2. A car travels 4.0 km (E) and then 3.0 km (S). The total trip requires 15 min. Calculate the speed of the car for this trip, in m/s. (2 marks)

3. How long would it take you to go 86 km if you ran at an average velocity of 12 km/h? (2 marks)

4. How long will it take a blue pidgin to travel at a constant speed of 12.0 m/s for distance of 132 m? (2 marks)

5. A truck has an initial velocity of 20 m/s [N] before speeding up to 60 m/s [N] in 10 s. Determine the average acceleration of this truck. (2 marks)

6. A plane starting from rest accelerates at a rate of 1.5 m/s2 [S] for 40 s before taking off. Determine the speed just before the take off of the plane. (2 marks)

7. A pot-bellied pig accelerates uniformly from 3.50 m/s to 12.5 m/s in 4.50 s. Determine the magnitude of the acceleration of the pig. (2 marks)

8. A car travelling on the highway at 80 km/h accelerates at 3.0 m/s2 for 5.0 s. What is the final speed of the car, in m/s? (2 marks)

9. A car is proceeding east at 50 km/h. After 15 minutes it is still travelling east but with a velocity of 25 km/h. What is its average acceleration? (2 marks)

10. A park ranger goes for a hike. He hikes 10 km [W] in 3.0 h, rested for 1.0 h, then hiked an additional 15 km [W] in 4.0 h.

a) Make a graph of displacement vs. time for this motion. Include a title, increments and labels with units on your axis. (2 marks)

b) Determine the velocity of the hiker during the first 10 km. (2 marks)

c) Determine the velocity of the hiker during the last 15 km. (2 marks)

11. A super-sonic jet can travel at speeds greater than the speed of sound. One particular jet begins flying at 100 m/s, then accelerates to 350 m/s in 15 s, leaving a sonic boom. The jet travels at a constant velocity of 350 m/s for an additional 30 s before slowing to a stop in 1.0 minute.

a) Make a graph of speed vs. time for this jet. Include a title, increments and labels with units on your axis. (2 marks)

b) What is the acceleration of the jet during the first 15 s? (2 marks)

c) What is the deceleration of the jet during the last minute of flight? (2 marks)
