PGA PROFESSIONAL FATHER-SON DUO IN CHARGE AT

SOUTHERN HILLS COUNTRY CLUB FOR 89th PGA CHAMPIONSHIP

TULSA, Okla. – In two weeks, Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla., will host a record fourth PGA Championship. And, that means the Dave Bryan family can add another notch to an impressive list of service spanning two decades at one of the country’s most respected championship venues.

Dave Bryan, 58, is in his 19th season as Southern Hills’ PGA head professional and will mark his third major championship at the club, which has hosted eight significant golf championships, including the 1970, ’82 and ’94 PGA Championships.

Joining in another major championship experience, Aug. 6-12, is Bryan’s five-member staff, which includes his son, David, 35, an assistant PGA professional in his ninth year at Southern Hills.

“It’s been a pretty easy relationship, and Dad is more of a hands-off boss,” said David, a former NAIA All-America selection at East Central University in Ada, Okla., and a 1992 U.S. Amateur competitor. “When I say that, he trusts that you are doing your job properly. I’ve enjoyed the experience for many reasons, one of which is obvious by staying close to our family.

“I joke about the fact that golf is all I know, but I say that because I learned the game through my dad, and spent time with him while he was at work and learning about the business. I think my Dad is a really good teacher. He really understands the golf swing.

“I’m enjoying the teaching, which consumes most of my time. I love the game, and that’s what the job is all about.”

Dave Bryan, a native of Chickasha, Okla., was recruited to play basketball at Southwestern Oklahoma University, but chose golf and became a walk-on player at the University of Oklahoma., where he became a member of the Sooners’ team before graduating in 1971. Bryan joined the golf industry in 1971 at Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club, and in 1975 became head professional at age 26 at Milburn Country Club in Kansas City, Mo.

From 1975-80, he worked in Kansas City, before returning to his native state as head professional at Oakwood Country Club in Enid. In 1984, Bryan became head professional at Tulsa Country Club, and in 1989, he began his journey at Southern Hills.

“Things have worked out well, and I guess you can say we stood the test of time,” said Bryan, both of his Southern Hills’ experience and having a son on his staff. “David handles the teaching duties for us, and he’s one of four assistants on the staff. It’s a staff that includes my Golf Shop Merchandiser, Renee Lamoreaux. She’s been here as long as I have, and she is invaluable. I hire great people and I believe in giving them the opportunity to be successful.”

As the world’s finest players assemble at Southern Hills Country Club, the Bryans are also anxious to see how the game’s elite will attack a course that has not needed much fine-tuning to be a challenge.

“This is a very traditional golf course, tree-lined and with the requirement for shaping shots,” said Dave. “The rough is not that long that you can not play out of it, but it is not a place you want to spend your time, either. The front side will be as tough as you want to play. I think starting even-par on the first three holes is a good score. If a player is to have the best chance for good scores, it comes from the fourth through 13th holes. After that, I believe we have as fine a set of finishing holes as you can get.”

David Bryan, who will be overseeing the practice facility during the 89th PGA Championship, worked in the club storage facility in 1994 at Southern Hills when Nick Price marched to his second PGA Championship.

In 2001, Bryan was a PGA apprentice when Retief Goosen captured the U.S. Open. Today’s 7,131-yard, par-70 course measured 6,824 yards in the 1994 PGA Championship and was 6,973 yards in 2001 for the U.S. Open.

“The golf course is as tough and as good as I’ve ever seen it,” said David. “I played it last week and I found it very difficult and I got to think the players also will find it difficult to make good scores.”

David has already assured the family legacy will continue, and perhaps add another servant to the golf industry. He and his wife, Layla, have a 2½-year-old son, David Kent Bryan III.

“The golf industry is a good business, but any decision to be in golf is completely up to him,” said David. “My Dad already got him a set of clubs, which are made for kids up to five years old. But, they are sitting in the corner for now. If my son truly loves the game, then that’s great. I plan to give him lots of opportunities. I want him to do it (golf) for him, and not for me.”

Tickets to the 89th PGA Championship are still available by calling 1-800-PGA-GOLF (732-4653) or by visiting the Championship’s official Web site, .

Players and clubhouse guests will enjoy a newly-refurbished locker room, gathering places and expanded meeting space inside the clubhouse for member and corporate hospitality. It also will accommodate this year’s Champions’ Dinner, hosted by Woods.
