Resources for Homeless Veterans in the DC, Maryland and Virginia Metropolitan Area
The National Coalition for Homeless Veterans (NCHV) is the only national organization solely dedicated to improving opportunities for homeless Veterans. In addition, call VA’s National Call Center Homeless Veterans toll-free hotline: 1-877-424-3838 (1-877-4AID-VET) or visit homeless for help with housing, jobs, health care, education and other Veterans benefits.
Stand Downs – VA Stand Downs are one-to three day events that provide services to homeless Veterans, such as: food, shelter, clothing, health screens, VA benefits counseling, Social Security benefits counseling, and referrals to a variety of other services such as housing, legal, employment and substance abuse treatment. To get access to these services: Go to the Homeless Veterans Program Coordinator. Homeless Veteran Program Coordinators are responsible for helping Veterans access VA and community-based help.
The National Association of American Veterans, Inc. (NAAV) provides community-based help for homeless Veterans through its partners such as Friendship Place of Washington, DC, the Maryland Department of Veterans Affairs, and the DC Office of Veterans Affairs and other nonprofit organizations throughout the greater Washington metropolitan area. NAAV, Inc. also provides counseling and emergency assistance referrals, pro bono legal, respite care, employment, and VA claims and benefits assistance. Suicide – If you are experiencing any signs of depression and/or lack of interaction with family and friends, the first thing to do is to ask for help. Call the Veterans Crisis Line at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).
VET Centers provide readjustment counseling and outreach services to any Veteran who served in a combat zone. Some of the services include: individual counseling; group counseling; marital and family counseling; bereavement counseling; guidance and referrals; alcohol/drug assessments; information and referrals to community resources, military sexual trauma counseling and referrals. To access services: Call the VA Center Staff at the VA Readjustment Counseling Service Call Center Monday through Friday during normal business hours at 1-877-927-8387(VETS).

Income Assistance for Homeless Veterans
There are five programs that may provide income assistance if you are homeless:
1. Social Security – a monthly benefit program for people 62 and over
2. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) – a monthly benefit for people who are disabled
3. Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) – a monthly benefit for people who are disabled
4. Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) – a cash benefit and work opportunity program for families with children that are most in need
5. VA Compensation – a monthly benefit paid to Veterans who are disabled because of an injury or disease that developed or worsened during military active duty
