VFW Post 4140: MEMORIAL DAY/50th ANNIVERSARY AT SFVJACC

The San Fernando Valley Nisei Post 4140, Veterans of Foreign Wars held its annual Memorial Day Service at the SFVJACC on Sunday May 30, 2010. Along with the solemn ceremony, the VFW celebrated its 50th anniversary with a luncheon at the Pioneer Hall, right after the services.

At the Kiyoshi Muranaga Veterans Memorial Garden, there are names of those honored for their service to our country. Kiyoshi Muranaga, recipient of the Medal of Honor, leads this group of those who served during WWII, the Korean War, Vietnam War and the Gulf War. Any deceased Japanese American veteran who served in the armed forces at any time and who resided in the San Fernando Valley can have their name inscribed at the veteran’s memorial.

All organizations from the San Fernando Valley Community center were represented at the service as well as family members of the deceased. They presented a floral tribute to their loved ones.

The VFW has held these services every year from 1961 to present. Commander Tanaka asked that the community to continue to remember those who gave their lives for our country.

There was a lunch and a short program commemorating the post’s 50th birthday. The chairman of the event was Victor Muraoka and Johnny Yamada served as emcee.

Commander Frank Tanaka, will presented a history of the post. Bob Hayamizu, grandfather of the post (he, along with Mote Nakasako and Eddie Shimatsu) began our post way back in 1961. There was a video presentation and photo displays from various people who were a part of the post. That included wives, children, grandchildren, friends and community members who have long supported the community veterans group.
