LESSON PLAN: Day 3 – Application of Massage Techniques & Body Mechanics

Duration: 90 Minutes

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this lesson the student should be able to:

• Demonstrate hand exercises for self-care

• Define and demonstrate proper body mechanics

• Exercises centering and grounding

• Describe and implement the basic elements used in applying Swedish massage strokes: depth, pressure, excursion, speed, duration, flow, and sequence.

• Describe and perform the five basic Swedish massage strokes and their variations: effleurage, petrissage, friction, tapotement, percussion, and vibration.

• Discuss the benefits of massage in various body systems.

• Demonstrate proper sequence for Swedish massage

1. While draped

4. Spread oil/lotion/cream

5. 3x effleurages

6. Left side of table (horse stance)

7. 2x kneading (up w/ hands) (down w/ forearms)

8. 5 sec tracing (iliac crest) opposite side

9. 1x racking

10. 2x cross friction (up w/ hands) (down w/ forearms) whole back

11. 3x tracing the scapula

12. 5-8 sec kneading (Opposite Trap)

13. 5-8 sec kneading the neck

14. Circular gliding strokes (to archer stance)

15. 2x Effleurages

16. Right side of table (horse stance)

17. 2x kneading (up w/ hands) (down w/ forearms)

19. 1x racking
