There are currently 14 FTE staff positions (with several outsource components), but the Association is undergoing a management and governance assessment to review its governance and management structure. This assessment, current structure, other qualitative and quantitative management reports and a governance bylaws revision will be available to semi-finalist candidates for review and discernment. Changes to the staff management structure of AME will take place in collaboration with the new CEO and the association’s leadership.The Association has the traditional mix of operating departments covering the areas of marketing, communications, membership, education, meetings, administration, finance and other professional Association components. AME is currently operating under a modified matrix management system whereby some staff report to volunteers and some volunteers report to staff for various programs and services. For a full examination of AME and its program of activities, preview the website at for further details.STATEMENT OF NEED FOR THE POSITION, SPECIFICATIONS AND PRINCIPLE ACCOUNTABILITIESAME is an association with strong, active leadership from its volunteer component. More than most associations, AME relies on the help and assistance of its volunteer leadership and volunteers that “work” the conferences of the Association. The board is currently reevaluating the role of the volunteer and staffing elements to ensure that they align and work well together in the future based on changing requirements.As indicated earlier, the Association is positioning itself to grow by undergoing a complete management and governance assessment and is hiring its next President and CEO with the retirement of the current President in July 2014. AME is in need of a President and CEO, who can help the governing bodies take the organization to the next level in infrastructure development, administrative, financial and program operations, as well as shape its new future with the Board of Directors. The President and CEO is held accountable for achieving all Association goals and objectives as determined by the Board of Directors. The President and CEO is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing the staff, as well as the Association’s overall programs and activities, according to its bylaws and policies, to achieve AME’s mission, goals and objectives in the most efficient and effective manner possible. POSITION SPECIFICATIONSTITLE:President and Chief Executive OfficerREPORTS TO:Board of Directors through the Chair of the BoardDIRECTLY SUPERVISES:A 4-5 person Executive Staff consisting of department heads in the various functional areasEXTERNAL CONTACTS: Members, individual and corporate company representatives, sponsors, volunteer leaders, vendors, partners, government, other associations /agencies and media INTERNAL CONTACTS& COORDINATION: Department Heads, all staff and outsource personnel/vendorsSUMMARY OF PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIESTo assure short- and long-term results based on board’s objectives, goals and policies.To manage the day-to-day personnel, administration and operations of the Association.To manage the Association annual budget, reserves, cash flow, investments and lease.To attend to all appropriate public and media relations of the Association.To cultivate membership, recruitment and retention proactively.To develop, promote and organize the awareness of the Association through meetings, publications, web and social media functions of the Association, and,To attend to the governance and management liaison operations with the Board in carrying out volunteer management operations.NATURE AND SCOPE OF THE POSITIONA.IntroductionAME has an opportunity for a highly skilled, articulate and dynamic leader who can foster an effective partnership of staff and Board in shaping and achieving the organization’s vision and strategies while at the same time providing the kind of “hands-on” input required to meet desired outcomes and expectations. The President and CEO is responsible for all matters relating to the management of AME including assistance to the Board in formulating policy and procedures and the execution of same. The individual is responsible for and has commensurate authority to achieve those tasks designated under Section B, Duties and Responsibilities. Although the President and CEO may delegate portions of her/his responsibilities consistent with sound operations and authorized policies and procedures, together with proportionate authority for their fulfillment, s/he may not delegate or relinquish any portion of her/his accountability for results.The President and CEO reports to and receives advice and guidance from the Chair of the Board. The Chair also chairs the Executive Committee, the Board and appoints the variety of Board committees assisting the Board in fulfilling its governance and programmatic responsibilities (see website for committees and functions). The President and CEO receives general administrative direction and broad policy guidance. Within the framework of Association policies, s/he appropriately develops, directs, controls, evaluates and operates within areas of responsibility. Duties and responsibilities lie in five major functional areas: (1) administrative management, resource and financial management, and personnel management; (2) Association and governance management; (3) development and membership management; (4) communications, marketing, and awareness/management; and (5) publications, meetings, and education management. Duties and Responsibilities 1. Manage the activities of staff and Association Headquarters.Responsible for setting compensation and benefits within the approved budget, hiring and termination of personnel employed by the Association.Sets all fees for programs and activities of the Association with the advice of the board.Serves as principal liaison with staff of affiliated and vendor organizations and any and all societies, industry, government and public service organizations as may be designated by the AME Board.Authorizes and executes through signatures such contracts and commitments for AME as may be authorized by the Board through budget or policy to carry out established Association objectives. Responsible for and maintains organization’s financial stability and well-being.2. As technical advisor to the Board, analyzes, evaluates, recommends and advises the Board on the broad spectrum of Association policies and procedures. Analyzes needs and plans; develops monitors and evaluates projects; and prepares reports of a sophisticated and technical nature impacting substantially upon the administrative, financial and operational focus of the Association.Serves as an officer of the Association and a director ex-officio without vote on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee, and all committees and task forces of the Association. Develops procedures/policy statements for review and adoption by the Board of Directors and Association Committees. Assists committees in the development of policies and procedures.3. Executes Association marketing, communication, publications, meetings and development/fund raising goals and objectives to ensure desired outcome and results.Serves as the spokesperson with the Chair for the Association and industry community and undertakes as many speeches, appearances, and other opportunities before the government, public, industry, and communities as feasible and appropriate.Supervises all programs and meetings for the Association and provides logistical support necessary to ensure their success.Works closely with the regions and consortia and provides support necessary for them to thrive in their own areas of operations.Supervises the Association’s print media and newsletter operations. Promotes interest and active participation in AME activities and programs among the membership and supervises the proper communication of activities of AME, the Board of Directors, Committees and/or Task Forces of AME to relevant constituencies. Represents the Association as liaison with contacts with national and international organizations, national, federal government and state agencies, corporate, community and professional groups.4. In keeping with our vision, mission and core values, works closely with the volunteer leadership structure to create an environment of mutual support in governing and managing the Association. AME has a large cadre of volunteers, many of whom currently do the work of staff. The President and CEO will review the current volunteer and staff structure and provide the Board with the best overall structural plan including best practices for the most efficient and effective operations given the current budget and operations of the Association.5. Identify needs of current and potential members. Anticipate long-range, strategic needs and opportunities within the manufacturing sector, as they pertain to AME operations that may influence the organization. Introduce new programs and ideas to the Board of Directors, with supporting data, analysis, recommendations, and plan for implementation.6. Completes other duties as assigned by the Board of Directors, the Executive Committee, and/or the Chair.C.Scope and Effect of WorkRecommendations and independent actions taken by the President and CEO affect the daily functioning of the Association. The President and CEO plays a vital role in short- and long-range Association planning in major administrative and financial areas of changing priorities. The ability of the Association to react immediately to various financial (most important), administrative, management, governance and membership issues as they occur depends directly on the competence and skill of the President and CEO.The activities of the President and CEO with the Board of Directors, Committees, Task Forces, regions and other governance elements of AME often influence their decisions and have direct bearing on policy formulated by the Association. The President and CEO represents the Association and interprets Association policies in contact with national and international agencies as well as with individuals. SUPERVISION AND GUIDANCE RECEIVEDThe President and CEO reports directly to the Chair and receives general administrative guidance from the Board of Directors through the Executive Committee and the Officers. During periods between Board meetings, the President and CEO seeks guidance from and reports to the Chair. Within the framework of Association policies and objectives, international, federal and state regulations and/or legislation, the President and CEO independently develops, recommends, evaluates and executes policy in all areas of responsibility. The President and CEO is expected to operate in all administrative, financial, governance and management areas without direct supervision. The Board of Directors will provide broad policy guidance, and it is the President and CEO's responsibility to provide the specifics and implement such instructions. The Board usually assigns projects to the President and CEO by indicating general project purposes/anticipated goals through the strategic plan or board guidance. The manner in which the projects are to be carried out in order to reach the goals and the staff to whom the projects are to be assigned are decisions determined by the President and CEO. The President and CEO provides a report to the Board/Executive Committee/Officers at each Board meeting about the progress towards goals and objectives and interim reports monthly and/or as necessary. The President and CEO operates without constant supervision or formal documentation. The Board recognizes that the role of volunteer management is to decide the direction and policies of the Board, and it is the job of the President and CEO to apply resources and solutions to implement them.The Executive Committee, acting as the personnel committee, through the Chair, will provide the President and CEO a formal yearly evaluation, and the Chair will provide an informal mid-year evaluation to ensure that the President and CEO is performing duties and responsibilities as appropriate.The Executive Committee is responsible for the contract, compensation, benefits and evaluation of the President and CEO and will report to the Board and receive policy parameters in that regard.PROFESSIONAL AND INTELLECTUAL DEMANDSThe President and CEO must have foresight in reviewing and administering the changing financial and administrative policy areas, in which problems could reach serious proportions. The President and CEO is called upon frequently to provide information on a variety of administrative and financial subjects to the Board, Committee chairs, regions and other Association entities and members, as well as outside organizations/agencies. It is important that the President and CEO keep abreast of:Association policies and practices; activities/projects ongoing by the Association; Status of projects assigned to and activities of units within the Association; Standards and procedures of Committees/Task Forces, of which the President and CEO is required to have specific knowledge; andKnowledge of current practices and future trends in the industry. Even though the President and CEO may not come from the field or have personal work experience with industry, s/he will be expected to become immersed in the field through instruction, education and visits with key field professionals. It cannot be over emphasized how critical the “understanding” of the field is in this regard. The President and CEO often makes decisions on matters of policy interpretation and/or major practices without specific instruction unless a serious problem exists, in which case the President and CEO confers with the Executive Committee, Board, or Chair in their absence. Because of the potential far-reaching ramifications of the President and CEO's decisions, thorough deliberation and review of precedents are mandatory and work with the Association’s Legal Counsel, as appropriate, will be expected as warranted. The President and CEO must maintain focus on the successful execution and integration of the Association’s strategic plans, annual budget and financial resources. S/he must stay tuned to industry trends in the manufacturing and other environments, potential growth opportunities and monitor all financial risks and agreements on behalf of the organization. PERSONAL WORK CONTACTSTo keep fully informed in the areas of responsibility, it is necessary that the President and CEO maintains direct, regular and continuing contacts with AME’s stakeholders including the following:Contacts including Association Legal Counsel and auditors;Senior and mid-level staff at a variety of Associations and educational institutions;CEOs and administrative, finance and personnel officials at a variety of corporate and nonprofit organizations/societies; and,Association service providers, clients and consultants; and the variety of mediaThe purpose of these contacts is to keep fully current in the latest regulations, laws, concepts, programs and equipment in administrative and operational areas in order to recommend appropriate changes to Association operations; to maintain positive relationships for potential joint collaboration efforts; and to ensure the Association is clearly represented as a major player among those having interest in the industry.QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPENSATIONQualificationsThe successful candidate must be motivated, entrepreneurial, diplomatic and with strong transformational leadership skills and demonstrated experience in association management or a similar field. A college degree (graduate degree preferred) or other degree with requisite experience in a related management field or discipline is necessary.The following are broad qualifications and experience that would be appropriate for the President and CEO:Require 8-15+ years of leadership work experience in senior management of an association or equivalent experience in other organizations as a CEO or senior management position;A combination of progressive experience in general administrative, financial, marketing and communications, publications, membership and other fields appropriate to association management. An understanding of fundamental principles associated with managing a professional association with corporate members and a large volunteer contingency is desirable; A thorough understanding of best practice association governance operations; experience with working with boards and committees and an understanding of organizational culture and its impact on operations is important;These are core qualifications critical to success:A good listener and strong collaborator – consensus/team builder;Problem solving, analytical and action-oriented based on informed decisions;Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills; Articulate, strong, logical communicator with excellent writing skills with ability to serve as the Association spokesperson along with key volunteers;Proven successful leadership in establishing revenue generating non dues revenue or other revenue producing activities in past positions;Additional desired attributes:Working knowledge of the manufacturing landscape is a plus; Demonstrated knowledge and or experience in understanding continuous improvement activities within various organizational environments; andKnowledge of association management I/T and Web-creative functions and production operations. Position Compensation, Benefits and Travel RequirementsDependent on qualifications and experience for an association in this size range and located in the Chicago area. Current compensation surveys place this position in the range of $175-225K depending on qualifications and experience. The Association also offers a yearly bonus depending on performance in a range up to 25% of base salary.A minimum of 45 days of travel per year is to be expected.
