AP US History – Presidential Election Project

The role of the presidency is crucial to the development of the United States. The earliest presidents helped shape the nation, for better or worse. Please select ONE of the men listed below to create a campaign on his behalf.

Prior to creating a campaign for the candidate you selected, research presidential campaigns from various sources. As you will find, there are several different approaches to presidential campaigns and several factors which make a strong candidate.

**You may create any type of campaign as long as the following information is included:**

1. Personal Biography (5 points): Describe the personal history of your candidate, while highlighting the experiences that will be a strength and a weakness to each of them. May include: education, family, wife, children, age, religion, etc

2. Major Issues: Identify five major policy issues that are pivotal to your candidate’s election. For each: discuss the issue itself, your candidate’s stance on the issue, and your candidate’s approach is what America will need (10 points for each issue).

You may need to include any of the following pieces of information to provide a complete response:

a. Political Life: political party affiliation, laws or government policies that defined his campaign, his role during the American Revolution

b. Economic policies: key economic policies he supports, economic structure he supports (which type of economy)

c. International relations/diplomacy: with France, England, Spain, Native Americans

d. Social reform: Social issues and needs of the time? Granted or worked on during the time?

3. Vice President: Select one of the men listed above to be your candidate’s running mate/vice president. Explain why you chose this man and how he compliments your candidate’s political and economic policies/perspective (6 points).

4. Slogan/Message: Explain the primary message(s) of your candidate, who he is targeting with each of these messages, and why he chose this message(s) (4 points).

5. Overall presentation: Make sure your campaign is interesting to the viewer, easy to locate information and understand, includes pictures and relevant images (5 points).

6. Class presentation: Your presentation should be persuasive, clearly stating your points of information, and demonstrate strong oratory skills (eye-contact, posture, tone and clarity of voice, etc) (5 points).

Total points: 75 points possible

Project and Presentation are due on Thursday, October 10th, 2013.
