Uploading to Blackboard or YouTube?

You have a choice of uploading videos directly into Blackboard or placing them on YouTube and linking from Blackboard. Unless security is an important issue, we recommend that you go the YouTube route for the following reasons:

Most students will have web browsers that can play YouTube videos. If you upload videos in Blackboard, there is no guarantee all students will be able to view it. *

Blackboard has a 100MB limit; YouTube does not. (Note that YouTube does have a 15 minutes limit on a single video by you can easily have this increased at no charge by having YouTube send a verifying code to your phone.)

YouTube Security Perhaps the only reason you might want to store a video on Blackboard is security. Videos uploaded to Blackboard can only be viewed by students within the same course. Note however, YouTube does offer some security:

Unlisted ? If you make a YouTube video "Unlisted", someone must know the video's address to view it. Further, it will not come up in a Google or YouTube search. In Blackboard, you would simply provide a link to the video or embed it. For most videos this is sufficient; however, it does not prevent students from emailing the link to someone outside of the course allowing them or anyone they share the link with to view it as well.

Private ? If you make a YouTube video "Private", only students with the Google accounts you have specified will be able to view the video. This is the most secure method but does require the professor to supply YouTube a list of student Google accounts. Note that there is a 50 student maximum and students will be prompted to sign into YouTube using their Google sign in when they click the video.

* Ensuring Students Can View Uploaded Videos (Blackboard / YouTube)

Whether or not students can view videos you have uploaded to Blackboard or YouTube depends entirely upon the web browser they are using, what plug-ins it may have, and what video players they have installed on their computer. Blackboard is just a file/web server and has no video players.

Uploading Videos to Blackboard If you intend to upload videos to Blackboard, we suggest using one of the more common video types listed below. Using a common video type makes it more likely that a student will have the proper plug-ins/players to view the video.

MPEG-4 (.MP4)

Quicktime (.mov) Windows Media Video (.wmv),

Flash

RealMedia (.rm)

(.swf or .flv)

Uploading Videos to YouTube Again, to best ensure that your students can view your videos, we recommend that you upload them to YouTube and make link from Blackboard. YouTube converts the files you upload to a format most browsers can play. YouTube accepts and converts the following file types:

.MOV

.MP4

.AVI

.WMV

.MPEGPS .FLV

.3GPP

.WebM

What Students Might See Depending on their Browser & Players This sections shows what students might get depending upon the file type uploaded and browser and players they have on their computers. Again, being able to play a video depends on the software students have on their computers not Blackboard.

Browser Had Plug-in In this example the student's browser had a plug-in for the file type the instructor uploaded so plays within the browser.

Browser did Not have Plug-in but Computer Does have Player In this example the student's browser did not have a plug-in capable of playing the video; however, if the student clicks on the link to the file and their computer has a player capable of playing it, the video will play in a secondary window as shown below. If they don't have a player, they should be prompted to download one.
