Vietnam Unit Project - Weebly

The Task:

You will be assuming several roles in an attempt to fully understand the American viewpoint toward, and atmosphere surrounding, the Vietnam War. In order to gain this understanding, you will be completing, using notes from class and outside research, any 3 of the following tasks:

Task #1: Create an illustrated timeline of the Vietnam War that lists the major events of the war from 1957 to 1975. The timeline will be graded on accuracy, presentation and visual appeal. Should have 6-8 events.

Task #2: Create a poster that visually demonstrates either pro-war or anti-war feelings regarding the Vietnam conflict. The poster will be graded on originality, content presentation, and visual impact.

Task #3: You turn eighteen and graduate from high school. Suddenly you are faced with a decision that will impact the rest of your life. What do you choose? Enrolling in college, trying to obtain a deferment, dodging the draft, becoming a conscientious objector, waiting until your draft number comes up, or enlisting? Using a journal format, analyze your feelings concerning the war, your family, your responsibilities, and your choices. By the end of the journal, you must have made a decision and indicated your reasoning for your choice. You must have 5 entries, each over ½ a page.

Task #4: You are a Vietnam vet. You have survived the war and you return to a country still divided over the United States’ involvement. There is no hero’s welcome for you, no ticker-tape parade, and no banquets in your honor. Instead, you are looked at by many as some kind of monster, a baby killer, someone who has joined with the government in its moral and political corruption. How do you answer the accusations of those who know nothing more of the war than what they see on television and read in the newspapers? In a Keynote presentation, a 1-2 page paper, or an oral report, defend your role as a soldier in the Vietnam War.

Task #5: Answer the following questions. Use complete sentences and explain each fully.

1. What started the whole conflict?

2. Who was involved in the war? Were other countries allied with the U.S.?

3. What was Agent Orange? What was it used for? What were the long-term effects on soldiers who were exposed to Agent Orange?

4. Who was president of North Vietnam at the time? Who was president of South Vietnam? What happened to the president of South Vietnam and who replaced him as leader?

5. How many people died in combat from the following countries during the Vietnam War:

United States

North Vietnam

South Vietnam?

6. What happened during the protest at Kent State?

7. Why was the United States not able to meet its military objectives in Vietnam?

8. When was the Vietnam Veterans Memorial erected? Where is it? What does it look like? Who designed it?

9. How many American soldiers were drafted?

10. How many American soldiers were POW’s?

11. What were some of the problems many soldiers had to deal with after the war?
