Investigating pH of Everyday Substances

Problem: What common products are acids or bases and how can we neutralize them?

Hypothesis:

Predict the acidity of the following substances placing an A- for acid; B- for base N- for neutral

|Substance |Acid/base/neutral |Substance |Acid/base/neutral |

|Antacid solution | |Laundry detergent | |

|Baking soda | |Vinegar | |

|Drain cleaner | |Ammonia | |

|Pop | |Sea salt solution | |

|Cream of tartar | |Tylenol solution | |

|Cleaning solution | |Vitamin C solution | |

|Bleach | |Apple juice | |

|Tap water | |Shampoo | |

Procedure:

STATIONS 1-3

1. Take note of the colour of the INDICATOR.

2. Place 5 drops of the substance you are testing (not the indicator) into a test tube using an eyedropper.

3. Place the appropriate number of drops of the “indicator” into the test tube (as stated in the table). DO NOT MIX THE EYEDROPPERS.

4. Record the “after” colour of the indicator.

5. Decide if this indicates if the substance is neutral, basic, or acidic and record it in the table.

6. Estimate the pH value of the substance and record it in the table.

7. Repeat steps 1 – 6 for all of the substances at the station.

8. Clean out the test tubes using the scrub brushes and water. Place the clean test tubes upside down in the rack for the next group.

9. Rotate stations when you are instructed.

STATIONS 4-5

1. Take note of the colour of the INDICATOR.

2. Dip the indicator strip into the solution.

3. Record the “after” colour of the indicator paper.

4. Decide if this indicates if the substance is neutral, basic, or acidic and record it in the table.

5. Estimate the pH value of the substance and record it in the table.

6. Repeat steps 1 – 5 for all of the substances at the station.

7. Place the strips into the garbage bin.

8. Rotate stations when you are instructed.
