Introduction

These resources are provided to support the teaching and learning of ethical and moral issues within ICT. The materials provide an introduction to the main concepts and should be used in conjunction with other resources and sound classroom teaching.

The main purpose of these resources is to spark a discussion and develop a debate in the classroom about the ethical and moral issues of emerging technologies.

Many of the resources are meant to be contentious and if used with discretion, enable pupils to explore their personal opinions, share their views with others, clarify their attitudes and help them reach their own moral and ethical conclusions.

Resources have been designed to be short stimulus units which will take up little lesson time, but will generate responses from pupils.

Teaching guidance

Match the description to the PEGI rating.

1. Drag each section to the appropriate PEGI rating and the previous statement will be displaced. Click the Check answer button when the activity is complete.

2. The activity may be used by pupils individually or led by the teacher on a whiteboard or screen. The class decision on ratings should be upheld before clicking the Check answer button. Any errors should then be revisited and explained.

3. Alternately the statements could be printed on paper for the pupils to rank and with the teacher the compiling and discussing responses before confirming the correct ratings. The ratings are available on the following page to crate this activity.

4. Pupils could be asked to PEGI rate the last three films they saw or the last three games they played.

PEGI Ratings

(Pan European Game Information)

Read the statements and note what you feel is the correct rating in the column on the right. The ratings refer to age and are:

3, 7, 12, 16, and 18.

|Statement |PEGI Rating |

| | |

|Videogames that show slightly more graphic violence towards fantasy character and non-graphic violence| |

|towards human looking characters or animals. Videogames that show nudity of a slightly more graphic | |

|nature. Any bad language in this category must be mild and not rude | |

| | |

|More real life images can be used. More extreme bad language. For example games can include the use | |

|of tobacco and drugs and the depiction of criminal activities. | |

| | |

|Any adult behaviour, language, sex and violence can be shown as a more graphic video game. Some | |

|extreme violence could be expected – a lot of blood and gore maybe | |

| | |

|The content of games given this rating is considered suitable for all ages. Some violence in a comical| |

|context (typically Bugs Bunny or Tom & Jerry cartoon forms of violence) is acceptable. They should be | |

|only fantasy figures, no real life action. The game should not contain any sounds or pictures that are| |

|likely to scare young children and no bad language. | |

| | |

|Any game that would normally be rated at 3 plus it may contain mild but some possibly frightening | |

|scenes or sounds. | |
