Schedule bowel preparation/taking contrast fluids
(telebrix gastro) before a CT colography
It is very important for the examination that you will keep to your low-fiber diet and that you take the contrast fluids (Telebrix gastro) according to schedule.
THE DIET
The diet starts one day before the planned CT-scan and consists of low fiber nutrition.
On the evening before the examination, do not eat after dinner. Please drink only clear liquids like
juice (apple juice, clear juice mixes), lemonade made of concentrate, soft drinks (also the light variety), water, broth, tea or coffee, until after the examination.
If you have a CT-colonography in the afternoon, you can use liquid food as your breakfast, like custard and yogurt (no "bits", like pieces of fruit).
General information
1 The principle of the diet is that fibre and fibrous components are being restricted from your food.
2 Many foods contain nuts, seeds or coarse fibers, don't choose these products but in stead choose a natural variant.
3 Vegetables and fruits contain a lot of fibre and are only allowed in moderation. Fruit in the form of fruit juice without pulp or vegetables is allowed.
4 Make sure to drink 10-12 glasses of water or other clear liquid a day.
Fiber-rich food ingredients you are not allowed to eat :
wholemeal cereals:
- wholemeal, brown and rye bread
- wheat and corn bran
- muesli
- wholemeal and multi grain pasta
- porridge
- brown rice
Fibre-rich vegetables:
- asparagus, celery, cabbage, beans, leeks, peas, and other plants of the pea family, corn, mushrooms, tomatoes, lettuce, coleslaw, onion, garlic
Certain types of fruit:
- unripe fruit
- oranges, grapefruit, clementines, pineapple, mango, kiwi
- dried (southern) fruit like dates, figs, prunes, raisins coconut
Nuts, peanuts and seeds:
- all kinds of peanuts
- all kinds of nuts
- sesameseeds, poppy seeds, or sunflower seeds
Other:
- hot spices
- popcorn
So what can you eat?
Cereals:
- white bread, rusks, crackers (no wholemeal)
- white rice, pasta (like spaghetti, macaroni)
- pancakes
- custard, rice pudding
Fruit and vegetables:
- potatoes
- cooked vegetables, like carrots, cauliflower, spinach and endive
- fresh fruit, if properly ripe, peeled and pitted, like apple, banana or pear
All kinds of meat, poultry and fish
Soups:
- broth or vegetable/chicken etc stock
- soups with bits of meat or chicken, noodles, macaroni or rice
Sandwich fillings:
- cheese
- all kinds of meat, chicken or fish
- all sweet fillings (except peanut butter, marmalade and jam with pieces of fruit
- eggs
- sugar
Beverages
- fruit juices without pulp
- lemonades
- soft drinks
- tea and coffee
- mineral water
- milk and milk products (cream, yogurt (no fruit yogurt)
- alcoholic beverages
Snacks
- chocolate (without nuts)
- candy
- ice cream
- cake (no cookies)
Spices:
salt, pepper, paprika, nutmeg, cinnamon, parsley, mustard, ketchup, green herb mixes
THE CONTRAST FLUID (Telebrix gastro 50 ml)
Telebrix is a iodinated contrast agent.
You will start one day before the examination with taking Telebrix gastro.
Telebrix gastro may cause diarrhea.
One day before the examination you will take 1 bottle Telebrix 50 ml at breakfast, 1 bottle during lunch and 1 at dinner. You may mix the contents of the bottle with a big glass of lemonade. (You don't need to mix the Telebrix gastro with 950 ml of water like stated on the instructions!).
On the day of the examination take the contents of 1 bottle of Telebrix gastro 1 ½ hours prior to the CT-colonography. Because Telebrix may cause diarrhea you may also take the contents in the Meander MC where are lavatories available. In this case, you will need to be in the Meander MC 1 ½ hours prior to the examination.
PREPARATION SCHEDULE IN SHORT
Below is the preliminary schedule summarized in short:
1 day before the examination: breakfast with low-fibre diet + 50 ml telebrix gastro
lunch with low-fibre diet + 50 ml Telebrix gastro
dinner with low-fibre diet+ 50 ml Telebrix gastro
The morning of the examination: liquid diet.
1 ½ hours prior to the CT: 50 ml Telebrix gastro
On the day of the examination, try to go to the lavatory several times for defaecation. For a proper intrepetation of the colon it is important you keep to the instructions of the preparation schedule as indicated above.
