Overview of DVD Components

For each scenario, real managers are confronted by actors playing the role of an employee. Generally, a meeting is conducted in which a difficult issue facing the individual or the organization is discussed (e.g., ethical dilemmas, office romance, diversity, mergers) and a resolution attempted.

The DVD includes the following components for each scenario:

• Profiles: Describe the job title and background of each of the individuals in the scenario.

• References: Provides concepts related to the actions taken in the scenario. These will relate to a topic you are covering in your course. The “References” and associated discussion questions are provided in the PowerPoint slides (described below) to facilitate a class discussion.

• Scenario:

o The Meeting: Video of the interaction between a manager and employee(s). Throughout this video, questions “pop-up” (hereafter “pop-up questions”) for the student to respond to immediately.

o Afterthoughts: Video of the manager’s reactions and thoughts on how effective the meeting was.

o Assessment: After viewing “The Meeting” and the “Afterthoughts”, the students can generate a comparison of their responses to the questions vs. the manager’s responses. This comparison may be printed or emailed to the instructor. An example assessment for Scenario #1, “Office Romance: Groping for Answers” is provided below.

Note: This assessment is not meant to suggest that the manager’s responses and actions are always correct. This comparison is useful for stimulating a discussion of the pros and cons of the manager’s actions. Students will enjoy discussing the rationale for their responses.

• Dossier: Background information about the scenario is provided here (e.g., emails, memos, voicemails)

• Create Report: The student has the opportunity to create a report evaluating the manager on their responses, actions, and overall performance. The report can be typed directly into the DVD program and may be printed and/or emailed to the instructor.

Instructor’s Resources

Instructor’s materials have been created to assist you in maximizing the learning experience for your students and to provide you with ways to flexibly integrate aspects of the DVD scenarios that will have the most impact for your course. The instructor may use the DVD to show the scenarios in class or assign students to view them independently. For each scenario, the instructor’s materials include:

I. Introduction: Provides a brief overview of the topics that will be focused on in the scenario.

II. Learning Objectives: Specifies concepts and applications students will gain from the scenario and accompanying exercises.

III. Scenario Description: Provides an Overview of the scenario, a list of the References, Profiles of individuals in the scenario, Summary of The Meeting, summary of the Afterthoughts, and list of the information in the Dossier.

IV. Discussion Questions: Discussion questions and suggested/potential answers are organized by learning objective. The pop-up questions the students see during The Meeting are integrated in this section and are indicated by this symbol - (.

The Discussion Questions may be used in a variety of ways depending on the time you have allocated and course design considerations (e.g., required homework, ability for students to work in small groups, etc.). These include:

1) In-class discussion questions facilitated by the instructor

2) Homework questions for students to complete after viewing the video in class or on their own

3) In-class exercises in which the students work in small groups to answer the questions

If students are assigned the DVD segment as homework, direct them to the information provided in the References section or to relevant pages in the textbook/readings so they have an understanding of these concepts before answering the discussion questions.

PowerPoint Slide Supplements

PowerPoint slides are provided for instructors to use or augment during a class discussion of the scenario. For each scenario, the associated PowerPoint file contains: 1. the graphics found in the References section of the DVD and 2. the Discussion Questions provided in the instructor’s materials. The discussion questions are organized by learning objective and the References are embedded within the discussion questions, as are the pop-up questions.
