Specimen Submission Guidelines

Transport Temperature: 4(C. Ship on cold packs.

SPECIMEN TYPE:

Specimen Required: The brain or head of animal. Whole animals are not accepted, with the exception of bats. The animal must be humanely euthanized prior to submission.

Minimum Acceptable Volume: N/A

Container: Specimen container sizes of 1 gallon or 3 gallon are available. Specify when ordering. One specimen per container.

Shipping Unit: Unit 47

SPECIMEN REJECTION CRITERIA:

Critical Data Needed For Testing: exposed individual’s name.

TEST PERFORMED:

Methodology: Direct Fluorescent Antibody (DFA).

Turn Around Time: 1-2 days.

Where/When Performed: Lansing, daily. Weekend/holiday testing available with pre-approval. See notes below.

RESULT INTERPRETATION:

Reference Range: Negative for rabies virus.

The presence of virus in brain tissue is demonstrated by using a fluorescent antibody stain.

NOTES:

1. *Rodents and lagomorphs are non-suspect animals and will not be examined. This includes: Chipmunk, Hamster, Rabbit, Gerbil, Mole, Rat, Gopher, Mouse, Shrew,

Guinea pig, Muskrat, Squirrel, Prairie dog, Vole.

2. A complete cross section of the spinal cord must be included in testing to report a negative finding.

3. When in transit, specimens should be kept chilled using the coolant supplied in the kit and the test request should be taped to the outside of the shipping bucket.

4. Three gallon containers cannot be shipped by U.S. Mail.
