Course Description and Content:
Visual Arts Comprehensive (VA COMP) is a prerequisite course and the foundation course for all Visual Arts Courses. VA COMP introduces the beginning art student to the Elements and Principles of Art and Design. Successful completion of this course qualifies students to continue their studies of art in courses such as Drawing I, Painting I, Jewelry I, and Ceramics I.
In this course, students learn:
❖ Art and design related schools and careers
❖ Introduction to art history
❖ Art criticism
❖ Drawing: shading in black and white with pencil and pen/ink
❖ Painting: introduction to color theory, aqueous media, and mixed media processes
❖ Ceramics: basic coil and slab construction / intermediate glazing techniques
Required Materials: THIS IS YOUR HOMEWORK! DUE BY: FRIDAY, 1/13/2017
• Course sketchbook component. Students must have a:
o Sketchbook or drawing pad: between 8x10 inches and 11x14 inches in size with clean, white pages (no composition notebooks, tracing pads, journals, etc. will be accepted). Sketchbooks can be purchased at any store that sells school supplies (Wal-Mart, Target, dollar stores, Hobby Lobby, Michael’s, Big Lots)
o Wooden pencil (the kind you have to sharpen)
o Eraser
Rules and Expectations:
• Arrive to class on time: In your SEAT, Sketchbook out, ALREADY WORKING!
• Use all tools and materials in a SAFE and APPROPRIATE manner. Or get a referral. Period.
• DO YOUR BEST ON ALL ASSIGNMENTS!
• Respect the teacher. Respect your classmates and their artwork. Respect yourself!
• Students must adhere to ALL McEachern behavioral expectations as outlined in the 2016-2017 McEachern Student Agenda and Handbook
• CELL PHONES: The Art Room is not a BYOD classroom. Students will receive a referral for any cell phone use. If you need to contact your child during the school day, call the McEachern front office at (770)222-3710 and they will relay your message.
• Automatic Administrative Referral:
• Misuse of ANY art materials
• Horse-playing during set-up / clean-up
• Damaging art work
• Hitting or inappropriate touching
• Fighting
• Stealing
GRADING POLICY and CATEGORIES/WEIGHT:
All grades will be based on a percentage system. All grades will be numeric. The grading scale is as follows:
A = 90 and above B = 80 – 89 C = 74 – 79 D = 70 – 73 F = 69 and below
Sketchbooks (Meaning and Creative Thinking) .…………..………….……..…...….… 25%
Classwork, Daily Grades, Critiques (Connections/Contextual Understanding) .…..... 15%

Social Media:
Photographs of students, student artwork, and events in the classroom may be posted to McEachern social media accounts including Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook. Signing this syllabus grants us permission to post any photographs and images from class.

Since art teachers tend to be known as the “scavengers” of the school, I figure I might as well go with tradition! If you have any extra of the following that you would like to donate to our class, it would be GREATLY appreciated:
• Magazines (school appropriate) for collage
• Glass vases, containers, or bottles
• More pencils
• Sharpies (any color, any size)
• Fabric scraps/yarn/sewing items
• Fake flowers or other greenery

• Rags – great for cleaning tables!
