Here are updated instructions for downloading Visual ...

Windows Users

Here are instructions below for downloading and installing Microsoft Visual Studio Express 2013 (assuming you have Windows 7, 8.1, or 10). Note you should install this version and not the 2015 version since we use the 2013 version on the faculty computers in the labs.

1. Use the link below to download and install Visual Studio Express 2013 for Windows Desktop:

Download the "wdexpress_full.exe" file and run it.

2. Select “I agree to the License …” box and de-select the “Join the …” box and hit the “install” button.

3. You need to register VS Express 2013 during the first month. In order to do this, open the help menu and select “Register Product”. You need a Microsoft Hotmail/Live/Outlook account in order to register.

Mac Users

For Mac users you need to be able to run windows software on your machine before installing visual studio express. If you have a lot of trouble you might want to try asking the “Apple Geniuses” in the Apple store for help.

There are two options for installing Windows. Both options require that you have a copy of Windows.

1. Install Boot Camp and then install windows (I recommend

Windows 7 home premium 64 bit or Windows 8.1).

2. Install a virtual machine (I recommend the most recent version of Parallels Desktop)

Here is an article on an earlier version:

Of the two options #1 is probably better since it has better compatibility and speed when running windows programs. The drawback is it takes more disk space than #2 (about 30 GB).

Here is some more information about using boot-camp to install Windows on a Mac based on my recent experience:

The following link describes how to install boot-camp and Windows using “boot camp assistant” located in the utility folder of the Mac OS.

Note that the install drivers step indicated above wasn’t even necessary when I used boot-camp 5.1.

After you have installed boot-camp and Windows you can choose which operating system you want to normally boot (Mac OS or Windows) by running “Boot Camp Control Panel” located in the Windows taskbar. The control panel can also change the track pad settings in order to add “tap-to-click” functionality similar to the Mac OS. Note that you can select which OS you want to boot by holding down the option key when booting the computer.
