4 Creating virtual disks

A prerequisite to creating the virtual disks is that all disk creation on the hosts system must be completed as follows:-

[pic]

VM-DATABASE = 30GB

VM-DATABASELOGS = 90GB

VM-IMG_CACHE = Remaining

Start the VMware utility:- Start – Programs – VMware – VMware Player highlight the “IMPAX AS300 V6.5” virtual machine and select “Edit Virtual Machine”

Again make sure that the drives have already been configured by the hosts system and make a note of the sizes that will be used to build the virtual disks.

A virtual disk will be created for each of the disks with the maximum size of the disk pre-allocated for increased performance.

[pic]

Make sure that the “Allocate all disk space now” is selected and enter the total size of the disk to be created. In this example we shall be creating all the E: drive into one virtual disk file.

[pic]

[pic]

[pic]

Complete the virtual disk creations for both the DATABASELOGS and for the IMG_CACHE by duplication the above process.

When all of the virtual disks have been created select OK then virtual machine will be ready for Altiris to install the Windows 2008 OS.

Automated VMware Player Installation and configuration via Altiris

An Altiris job has been created to automate most of the manual VMware install and configuration. At present the only manual configuration will be to add the virtual disks created by Altiris to the virtual machine.

[pic]

This job will:-

• Install VMware Player 3.0

• Create the virtual machine by copying over the pre-captured configuration files

• Create the entire virtual disks by the use of “vmware-vdiskmanager”

This job is run as part of the initial Win 7 host configuration.

[pic]

When the first stage completes carry out the following manual VMware configuration to add the virtual disks to the new virtual machine.

Start the VMware utility:- Start – Programs – VMware – VMware Player highlight the “IMPAX AS300 V6.5” virtual machine and select “Edit Virtual Machine”

[pic]

Select ‘Add’ and the ‘Hard Disk” should already be high-lighted.

[pic]

[pic]

Select ‘Next’ then “Use an existing virtual disk”

Select ‘Next’

[pic]

Navigate to the virtual disk you wish to add. This example shows the virtual disk created in the DATABASE directory. Select the “E:\IMPAX-AS300-V6.5-0.vmdk”

[pic]

Once selected click on ‘Finish’

[pic]

If after selecting ‘Finish’ you are asked to convert this VM partition select ‘Convert” then OK.

[pic]

Complete the virtual disk additions for both the DATABASELOGS and for the IMG_CACHE by duplication the above process.

When all of the virtual disks have been created select OK then virtual machine will be ready for Altiris to install the Windows 2008 OS.

[pic]

Removal of Audio & floppy drive

So not to distract the user when viewing images with possible warnings from the Admin tools, it would be advantageous to remove the audio card from the virtual machine. The floppy too will be removed for system resource management improvement.

Start the VMware utility:- Start – Programs – VMware – VMware Player highlight the “IMPAX AS300 V6.5” virtual machine and select “Edit Virtual Machine”

[pic]

Select the “Floppy’ then ‘Remove”

[pic]

Do the same process for the Audio card then click on OK.

[pic]

Installing Windows 2008 into the virtual machine

The virtual machine is now ready for Altiris to deploy the Windows 2008 image.

The procedure will be covered in depth by the Altiris Standalone installation document but to initiate the Windows image download select “Play virtual Machine form the VMware gui

[pic]

As there is no Operation system the virtual disk will PXE boot and find the Altiris server PXE boot menu. Select WinPE Managed

[pic]

The virtual machine will now PXE boot to WinPE

[pic]

[pic]

The new Virtual Machine will be seen by Altiris and will be designated a VMware computer

The Windows 2008 image from the 6.5 client standalone job can now be deployed.

Make sure that “Microsoft Windows” is selected then select “Windows Server 2008” from the drop down menu. Select an appropriate Virtual machine name. In this example “IMPAX AS300 V6.5” was used. Keep the default location for the configuration files.

Adjust the Maximum Disk size to 75GB. This will allow for the later configuration by Altiris the disks C:\ 40GB, V:\10 GB L:\1GB and R:\20GB. Click on “Customize Hardware” to configure the network settings

As default the network is configured as NAT. Select “Bridged” and “Replicate Physical Network connection state”. Click on Finish

In the Virtual Machine settings menu select “Add” then “Hard Disk” should be highlighted then select “Next”

Select “Create a new virtual disk”, “Next” then confirm that the recommended “SCSI” is selected then click “Next”

Direct the default file name to the E:\ drive by adding it to the beginning of the file. Click on finish to begin the virtual disk build.

Once the virtual disk has been created it will be seen in the virtual machine setting menu and two files will be seen in the E:\ partition
