LESSON PLAN AND TEACHER'S NOTES

Motivation/Background Building Partner dictation: In pairs, students use the Oxford Picture Dictionary (OPD): A Classroom (pages 67) and select 3-5 vocabulary words related to classroom objects. Partner A reads aloud one word at a time without showing Partner B the book. Partner B listens and writes each word in their notebook. In pairs, students check spelling and then switch roles. Another option is to create an A/B partner dictation worksheet (example included). This activity could be modified into a word search or cloze activity as well.

Presentation 1 In advance, place a numbered sticker on various classroom items in the room. Explain to students that there are classroom items labeled with a sticker that has a number on it. Each item has a different number. Show example. Display Scavenger Hunt Worksheet on the board and explain instructions. Level 100 students will 1) read the word on the Scavenger Hunt Worksheet 2) find the item in the classroom and 3) write the corresponding number (from the numbered sticker) on the Scavenger Hunt Worksheet. Note: Students should use the OPD to reference example of item if needed. Level 150/200 students will 1) look for classroom items that are labeled with a numbered sticker 2) write the classroom item next to each number on the Scavenger Hunt Worksheet. Note: Students should use the OPD to check spelling. Model how to reference the spelling in the text and leave OPD open on tables. Also, note to students OPD classroom object numbers on page 6-7 and scavenger hunt numbers are not related.

Note: Keep a Reference Sheet (example included) for both Level 100 and Level 150/200 Level as a key. Students SHOULD NOT talk during the scavenger hunt. One suggestion is to play background music while students are working.

Practice Students complete the classroom scavenger hunt activity. The first student to find all the items with words spelled correctly wins. Review answers by displaying the Scavenger Hunt Worksheet on the board and having students come to the board to write their answers.

Presentation 2 Using the list of classroom items vocabulary, model an instruction (e.g. open your notebook, push in your chair, close your book, pick-up your pencil). Use Total Physical Response (TPR) to engage all students and to give different instructions for students to follow.

Application and Evaluation Ask students to write down three instructions. Then choose students to give instructions to the class or have each student give an instruction to the class.

Extension Activities for the Classroom and Beyond Review vocabulary with a bingo game or word search. Give students practice with REEPWORLD Getting Started Beginner ?Classroom Objects Quizlet: or Action Verbs in the Classroom: Use the classroom pictures realia to elicit vocabulary and review or use realia in class to review vocabulary. You can also focus on singular/plural grammar point (1 pen / 2 pens). If more practice is needed you can do a word scramble.

If students are unfamiliar with using Quizlet, model how to navigate to the sets and how to practice with them. Use relevant vocabulary for computer, smartphone, and browser navigation. See Internet 1 and Mobile 1 in the Digital Literacy Skill Chart of the curriculum.
