English Speech:Distinctive voices. They are instruments composers use to persuade entire generations about their ideas and perspectives of the world. Distinctive voices. They explore the timeless themes of respect, consumerism, and terrorism in our society. Bruce Dawe’s Enter Without So Much As Knocking and George Walker Bush’s After September 11th are two amazing texts that were extremely relevant in the past and remain relevant today. The 1950s were a time of peace and freedom from the extravagant WWII that entertained the world. The economy was at its peak and shopping was everyone’s hobby. In Enter Without So Much As Knocking, Dawe adopts a remonstrator and consumer voice to highlight the sickening impact consumerism has on our value of respect, our relationships and ourselves. In, “Pretty soon he was old enough to be realistic like every other godless money-hungry back-stabbing miserable so and so.”, the euphemism applied distinguishes the persona has been consumed by consumerism, falling victim to egomania. It emphasises to the audience despite the end of a selfish WWII, individuals remain selfish. Individuals cared more about themselves then and we are still egocentric today. It evokes a disgusted and terrified response from the audience. They realise no matter how many reckless, intolerable, back stabbing, miserable wars we have and will encounter nobody will develop a sense of compassion. We need to hold onto our timeless values of compassion and respect towards others.Additionally, in “Ten days old... first thing he heard was Bobby Dazzler on Channel 7: Hello hello hello all you lucky people” The patronization of the show ‘Pick A Box’ employed emphasises the first communication the persona has with the world is with the TV not his mother. It portrays to the audience society is so consumed by consumerism, we are dependent on maintaining our relationships with technology. This evokes a shocked response from the audience. They understand our lives are contaminated with the disease of consumerism. We have relied on technology to avoid communicating face to face with others then and is still occurring today. Furthermore, Dawe explores the negative influential nature of consumerism. In, “One economy sized Mum, one Anthony Squires… Dad.. two other kids straight off the Junior Department rack” the symbolism implemented conveys to the audience the pressure society endures from the influence of consumerism in the 1950s, which continues to be a major issue today. This induces a concerned response from the audience as they realise this is a never ending cycle where humans have been and continue to be exploited by consumerism. We are chained to the manacles of consumerism, pressuring us to be materialistic clones. Terrorism and discrimination of Muslims and Arabs was born in the 1970s. George Walker Bush was the 43rd president of America from 2001 to 2009. Contrastingly to Dawe, in his speech After September 11th, he adopts a presidential and social justice voice to emphasise the importance of timeless issues of terrorism and discrimination. In, “The enemy of America is not our many Muslim friends… Arab friends. Our enemy is the radical network of terrorists and every government that supports them.”. This incorporative rhetorical manoeuvre employed emphasises to the audience terrorism has contributed to the discrimination of Muslims. It elicits a frightened response from the audience as they realise discrimination has been a timeless issue and we need to hold onto our value of equality. America’s symbol of Lady Liberty outlines the importance of justice, equality, and freedom. We are reminded we abolished and continue to abolish her value of equality by discriminating Muslims about terrorism. Hence justice and freedom aren't assured. Why do you think terrorism is advancing and our multicultural society is segregating?Furthermore, in “We will come together to improve air safety... We will come together to promote stability… We will come together to take active steps that strengthen America”. The powerful anaphora employed distinguishes to the audience terrorism has occurred in the past and today we are still attempting to prevent facing another unexpected terrorist attack. This elicits a motivated response from the audience to unite as a community to combat fear. They understand the advocator’s message that we have avoided to bring each other up and still avoid bringing each other up when radicalism’s guns shoot us down. We have and continue to silence our screams, allowing criminal justice to be served. We need to overcome the fear cloaking us and slaughter terrorism. Distinctive voices. They create powerful messages that are imprinted in our minds. These two texts explore consumerism and terrorism, problems relevant to the generations of yesterday, today and tomorrow. Are there any other texts that remain as relevant in our society today as it was yesterday? ................
