THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW FOR 2017-2018

1. School starts at 8:56 a.m. and ends at 3:41 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. 2. On early release Wednesdays, school starts at 8:56 a.m. and ends at 2:41, see calendar for

dates. 3. School lunch cost is $2.00; breakfast cost is $1.00. Teachers will inform students of their

lunch time the first day of school. 4. The phone number for transportation is (386) 575-4087. 5. Each student receives a Code of Student Conduct that explains Heritage Middle School's

expectations for behavior and dress code. 6. Parent conferences are held on Mondays, Wednesdays or Fridays at 8:20 a.m. For an

appointment, please call the Grade Level Houses. 7. The address of our school website is 8. PE uniform cost is $20.00. Students purchase these in PE class during the first week of

school. 9. Heritage will be offering after school clubs/groups after the first few weeks of school.

These clubs will be announced to the students. 10. Tutoring/Academic Assistance programs may be available for all students, if funding

permits. 11. Supply lists are given to students by their teachers within the first week of school. 12. Parent Pick-Up is in the front of the school. Only school buses are permitted on the bus

loop by the gymnasium. 13. Hallway lockers may be purchased the first week of school for $5.00. 14. Gradebook allows parents and students to view teachers' grade books online and have direct

access to teacher email. This is a great way to keep up to date with your child's academic progress.

Volusia County Schools' chain of support If you have an issue with your child at school, first talk with

your child's teacher. If the teacher is unable to help you resolve the issue, seek assistance from others. The chain of

Heritage Procedures

Arriving on Campus Students should not be on campus prior to 8:15 AM as there is not supervision until that time. Upon arrival, students will go directly to their morning waiting area or to the cafeteria for breakfast beginning at 8:20. Student Waiting Areas:

STUDENT BEHAVIORAL SCHOOL-WIDE EXPECTATIONS

Heritage Middle School students are expected to:

1. Treat everyone with courtesy and respect at all times (profanity, fighting, name-calling and bullying are not acceptable and will not be tolerated);

2. Refrain from all behavior which detracts from an orderly, learning environment. 3. Be on time for classes and prepared for instruction; 4. Demonstrate pride in themselves and our school by keeping the school clean and free

from vandalism. 5. Refrain from all unauthorized sale of items at school.

Cell Phones

Students may use their cell phones: ? Before School ? After School ? During Lunch ? During Teacher-Approved BYOT activities

During class changes and in the hallways, cell phones must be put away, out of sight. Headphones and ear buds must be put away in a backpack or pocket and are not permitted to be hanging around the neck, on the head, or be visible from under a shirt, jacket, or sweatshirt.

Cafeteria Expectations

When released for lunch, students will proceed directly to the cafeteria for lunch. Once in the cafeteria, students will:

? Place their backpacks on a seat ? WALK to a line ? Touch only the items you will be eating ? Use "Please" and "Thank you" ? Speak clearly when stating your name and number ? Get all condiments prior to sitting at a table ? Once seated, remain seated ? Speak with other students at the table ? Keeps hands, feet, food, and objects to yourself ? Use headphones if listening to music on your phone ? Raise your hand for assistance

FOOD/DRINK

Neither food nor drink should be in the hallways or classroom during instructional time.

STUDENT ATTENDANCE

? Students arriving before 9:05 a.m. will report directly to their 1st period class. ? Students arriving after 9:05 a.m. must have an Admittance Slip from the Front Office. ? Tardy is defined as not being in the classroom when the teacher begins roll-

taking/instruction/ activities after the bell has rung.

STUDENT ABSENCES

? Students must be in attendance by 10:00 a.m. to be eligible for participation in afterschool activities that day.

? Students absent from school are prohibited from attendance at all after-school functions. ? Students under suspension will not be permitted to participate in school-sponsored

activities (both before and after school) during the term of any suspension.

? Students under suspension are required to remain under said parents'/guardians' supervision during normal school hours and be occupied with school work during such hours.

? Written notes excusing student absenteeism should be turned in to the attendance clerk/registrar (Ms. Batista).

STUDENT MAKE-UP WORK POLICY

? For absences and out-of-school suspensions (OSS), one day for each day absent will be given to the student to make up work required for each class.

? Students assigned OSS for 1 or 2 days will be directed to request their missing work from each teacher upon returning to school.

? Students assigned OSS for 3 or more days will have the option of collecting make-up work (and assignments planned during the suspension) within two days of requesting the work from the grade house specialist.

HERITAGE MIDDLE SCHOOL DRESS CODE 2017-2018

All students are expected to dress in a manner that respects the dignity of all. Clothing must never endanger anyone's health or contribute to accidents. A student's appearance should not distract, disrupt, or be offensive in an educational setting. Cleanliness is an expected practice. Parental guidance in the area of dress is necessary so the student avoids controversy while on campus. See the Volusia County School Board Dress Code outlining specifics and details in the VCSB student code of conduct. Refer to Policy 217.

HERITAGE MIDDLE SCHOOL DRESS CODE POLICY

Head - No caps, visors, hoods, bandanas, or other head gear, except with administrative permission. Hats will be allowed in extreme cold or inclement weather.

Upper garments - All garments must cover shoulder to shoulder. All garments must be long enough to clearly overlap the beltline or stay tucked in. NO muscle shirts, tank tops, spaghetti straps or halter tops. Necklines must be modest; low cut necklines are prohibited. The cut of the garment must not expose undergarments or cleavage. NO pajamas allowed. No rips/tears or skintight items. If a sweatshirt or jacket is worn, students must be able to show the collar of the uniform shirt when asked.

Lower garments - Undergarments and the buttocks MUST remain entirely covered even while seated. Dresses, skirts and shorts must be at least mid-thigh or below in length. The waistband of the pants, shorts or skirts must be worn and secured between the hips and the waist. No rips/tears or skintight items. This includes tights, yoga pants, etc.

Footwear - Shoes must be safe and appropriate. No slippers or shoes with wheels are permitted on campus. Open toe shoes must have a back. No flip flops or slides allowed on campus.

Accessories - Clothing, jewelry and accessories must not convey inappropriate messages that are crude, vulgar/profane, violent/death-oriented, gang related, sexually suggestive, promote alcohol, drugs, tobacco or illegal activities or products. Jewelry and accessories that pose a safety concern are prohibited, including dog collars, wallet chains, large hair picks or chains that connect one part of the body to another. Sunglasses may only be worn outside. HATS ARE NOT PERMITTED.

HERITAGE MIDDLE SCHOOL UNIFORM POLICY

1. Review VCS Policy 217 in Student Code of Conduct. 2. Heritage shirt colors can be either black or green with white and grey being a district-wide color.

THE SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION RESERVES THE RIGHT TO BE

THE FINAL AUTHORITY AS TO THE APPROPRIATENESS OF DRESS.

Students who violate these regulations will be required to attend ISS (In-School Suspension) until a parent can bring appropriate attire or take them home to change. Disciplinary action may be taken as outlined in VCS Policy 217.

Student Media Center and Computer Policies

The Media Center is open from 8:30 until 4:15 for students' use. Students entering the center before school and/or during lunch will be reading, working on homework or research, studying or using computers for assigned class work. Students will sit two per table and work quietly. Before school starts, students may pick up daily or quarterly lunch passes at the circulation desk.

Chairs and tables will be straightened and all work areas will be cleaned before leaving the center. Food and drink are not allowed in the center.

During the school day, students entering the Media Center without a teacher must sign in and present their passes at the circulation desk. Students needing to use computers must have a pass from their teacher(s) describing the assignment or any Internet sites that the students need to access. Students are not allowed to surf the Internet. The students' teachers are responsible for verifying that the students have a signed Electronic Information Service Acceptable Use Policy on file. Students may access any e-book in Heritage's collection on available computers.

The use of computers and the Internet is a privilege. Any unauthorized or inappropriate use will result in cancellation of this privilege and/or other disciplinary action deemed appropriate by the administration. A school or district administrator, or their designee,

will determine if a use is inappropriate and her/his decision and any subsequent action will be binding. Users are bound by the acceptable use policies of Volusia County Schools and Heritage Middle School.

Students and their parents are required to read and sign the Volusia County Schools Electronic Information Services Acceptable Use Policy before a student may access the Internet. These forms will be returned to students' first period teachers and kept on file for the school year. In addition to the county's policy, Heritage students will abide by these rules:

1. Use only those programs assigned by your teacher. 2. Students will not access personal e-mail, blogs, social networking sites, or

unapproved on-line game sites. 3. Changes to the desktop, wall paper, mouse settings or any other program will result

in disciplinary action. Students will report any changes on their computer to a teacher before beginning to work. 4. Printing is $0.10 per page. 5. Students will save files to a USB/flash drive or on their Office 365 account. The Office 365 account is a free online service that is available to all Volusia County students via the district. Students can access Office 365 through the internet and will log in using their four digit Alpha code and birthdate. 6. Electronic devices will be turned off and out of sight.

Connect ED

Connect ED school-to-home telephone messaging system allows the superintendent and school principals to send periodic and personalized messages to all parents and families with one recorded phone call. Parents are encouraged to list current phone numbers on the Emergency Information Card for each student. Only the numbers listed will be used. The one-way text messaging feature requires an effort to make sure cell phone numbers are collected and input properly so they can be uploaded to the automated calling system. Parents may periodically receive a text messages and may opt-out if they do not wish to continue receiving messages in this format. There is always the ability to call the school to opt in or out at any time during the school year.
