Video Game Therapy Protocol

STRETCHING (5-10 MINUTES)

Active Assisted/ Passive ROM

1) Perform stretch to maximal UE ROM and hold for a minimum of 20 seconds for any motion with less than WNL ROM. Repeat as necessary to any affected joints.

2) Stretch may be done in sitting, prone or supine.

VIDEO THERAPY (25-35 MINUTES)

1) Select video games in at least two of the activity categories listed below for each session

2) Perform activity in standing and at least one other body position (sitting, supine, standing, prone, quadruped, kneeling)

***EMPHASIS: maximal reach of UEs and UE ROM with extended time in ranges above shoulder height. Try to make therapy continuous with rest breaks only as needed for patient endurance.***

POSITION MODIFICATIONS: All games can be played in standing, sitting on stable or dynamic surface, kneeling, half kneeling or prone. With any game, setting camera higher or offset to one side will increased reach.

PLAY 2 – Air guitar, Homerun, Knock Out, Bubblepop, DIY (Do It Yourself), Drummin’, Goal Attack, Secret Agent, Table Tennis, Kung 2, Mr. Chef, Monkey Bars

GROOVE - a dancing game where you hit targets with your arms on the edges of the screen to the beat of the music.

ANTIGRAV - is a hover board game where your movements are reflected in the movements of an avatar on the TV screen. Use your arms and body to lean, balance and jump to control the hover board through an obstacle course.

KINETIC - is an exercise program designed to help improve fitness through exercise games and challenges. The game has four zones: cardiac,combat, toning, and mind and body. The game offers a personal trainer mode where an avatar will guide you through a 12 week workout. You are able to do a warm-up and stretches before each workout. Workouts may be saved and built upon over time.

|Overhead Reaching Abduction – encourage single arm repetitious reaching above shoulder height in the coronal plane for |

|function or play. Minimize trunk compensation. |

|Examples: Above activities but with body turned to side (or lying in side lying). Snow angels on mat. |

|Overhead throw/catch – encourage bilateral reaching above shoulder height. Minimize trunk compensation |

|Examples: throwing and catching bean bags, or small balls above head(single arm); throwing or catching, beach ball, large |

|balls over head (both arms). |

|Sustained overhead support – encourage sustained bilateral reach above shoulder height with added weight. Closed chain |

|flexion or abduction with some weight support. |

|Examples: hold pole overhead for batting activity; hold swing ropes above shoulder height while swinging; hold monkey bars |

|while climbing or swinging; ladder climbing; hold rope while being pulled on scooter board; crawling through tunne. |

Ages 9-12

|wall above shoulder level (finger walking, ball rolling); play game (connect 4, jenga, kerplunk) placed on high table or |

|surface above shoulder height; lying prone on large ball, BOSU, swing, or mat, reach forward for activity, game or ball. |

|Overhead Reaching Abduction – encourage single arm repetitious reaching above shoulder height in the coronal plane for |

|function or play. Minimize trunk compensation. |

|Examples: Above activities but with body turned to side (or lying in side lying); jumping jacks; side lying reaching |
