Academic Honesty

You are expected to maintain the highest standards of academic conduct. When you cheat, you are robbing yourself of knowledge, the learning experience and my company. I will be holding you to high ethical standards to which you will be expected to maintain at all times.

You are guilty of cheating whenever you present work as your own and it was not done by you. You are also guilty of cheating if you help someone else to cheat. Any student(s) who is discovered cheating will receive a “0” for that assignment and have the work documented in their portfolio. In addition to, a conduct grade of an “F” for the present nine-weeks. A referral to Guidance may be issued based on the assignment.

Permission Slips, Specials and Skipping

Any student whose grade is below a “C” average in class will not be given permission, by me, to attend any function that that requires my authorization. This includes functions for other teachers. Students who perform well in class shall be given every opportunity to attend school functions as well as any special events not mandated by the school.

Students on specials must check in check in with me so I may take proper attendance for the period. Students with another teacher who do not check in will have an unexcused tardy/absence for the period. Students skipping class will be written up to the proper administrator and a phone/text via remind will be made to the parent.

Classroom Expectations

It is your responsibility to put forth maximum effort in order to take full advantage of your learning potential. Therefore, good behavior is expected at all times. I look forward to a distraction-free environment that will be beneficial to both learning and teaching. Below are basic classroom rules:

1. BE PROMPT. You are expected to be in your seats and working when the bell rings. You are considered late if you are not in class and seated when the last bell rings. Home Learning assignments will be placed in the bin at the beginning of class unless otherwise indicated. If you did not complete your homework, you will be required to fill out a missing/late work slip to hand in for the assignment. When you accumulate 4 unexcused tardies you will receive a detention for the 4 unexcused tardies as well as lower conduct grade for each tardy; 5 or more consecutive tardies may result in a referral to the appropriate administrator.

2. BE PREPARED. While in class, you are expected to give your undivided attention to the work at hand. You MUST have the following materials in class everyday: writing utensil, composition book, 3 or 5-subject spiral notebook, and a novel. 3. BE RESPECTFUL. Always be courteous; obscene gestures, cursing, unkind remarks, and bullying of any kind are unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Always raise your hand and wait for permission to speak. Always keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself. Be attentive so you can follow directions the first time they are given.

4. REMAIN SEATED. Always stay in your assigned seat unless you have permission to do otherwise. The bell at the end of the period only signals the time but does not dismiss you. You may leave class when I dismiss you! You ARE NOT to linger by the door around dismissal time.

DORAL ACADEMY PREP ACADEMIC INTEGRITY POLICY

All Doral Academy Charter students are expected to be honest in the way they carry out, present and submit their work. This means that all parts of all works submitted for assessments, whether internal or external, must either be original to the student or must be properly cited.

Academic Dishonesty

Academic dishonesty/malpractice may involve:

• Copying materials from a textbook, the internet, or another student and presenting it as one’s own work.

• Collusion.

• Taking unauthorized materials into an examination room (e.g. electronic devices other than a permitted calculator, notes, smartphones, etc.) regardless of whether this material is used or potentially contains information pertinent to the examination.

• Misconduct during an examination, including any attempt to disrupt the examination or distract another student.

• Exchanging or in any way supporting, or attempting to support, the passing of information that is related to an examination.

• Failing to comply with the instructions of the teacher/proctor or other members of the school’s staff responsible for the conduct of the examination.

• Impersonating another student.

• Stealing/copying examination papers.

• Using an unauthorized calculator during an examination.

• Disclosing or discussing the content of an examination paper with a person outside of the immediate school community within 24 hours of the end of the examination.

**The list above is by no means exhaustive.

Distinction between legitimate collaboration and unacceptable collusion or plagiarism

There are occasions when group work is entirely desirable and acceptable. This is legitimate collaboration. In such a case, each student involved should play a distinct part so that it is clearly seen how their contribution differs from that of others in the group. Any written work presented must be individual. One student cannot do the writing for another.

Unacceptable collusion occurs when one student copies from another with their agreement, or when one student does the work for another.

Actions to be taken by the school if a student is found guilty of malpractice

The emphasis of Doral Academy’s academic honesty policy is on prevention, and on students learning the appropriate skills of correctly referencing work. We are aware that students come from a variety of cultural backgrounds, and it may take them time to understand this policy. This is not to say that plagiarism is tolerated. Repeated offences will mean that more severe action will be implemented. Student’s found guilty of malpractice in general will be subject to consequences at the discretion of the school administration which can include:

• Meeting with student’s counselor and school administrator about the incident. Parents notified

• Zero earned for the assignment

• Saturday school detention

• Outdoor suspension

• Student placed on academic probation for the school year

How are students educated about academic honesty and integrity?

▪ Parents will be required to read and sign Academic Honesty and Integrity agreement.

▪ Policy will be explained by teacher and may be included in teacher’s syllabi.

▪ Policy will be located in both Parent and Student contract.

▪ Policy will be detailed in school’s morning announcements

I have read the Doral Academy Prep Academic Integrity Policy and understand the consequences associated with any violation of this policy.
