Students will begin this unit by becoming familiar with the vocabulary associated with the personal finance unit. The students will use Quizlet to practice and review their vocabulary terms. The students will be working in groups to plan a menu and purchase the grocery items for an assigned family and will have to stay within a budget. Students will work together visiting several online grocery stores to see what store they want to buy their items from. Students will analyze what discounts or coupons are available at each store. Students can create a chart to compare the items and prices in Office 365. The students will have the opportunity to play several personal finance scenario games to become better aquatinted with the multitude of issues that can impact finances. Some examples would be Countdown to Retirement, Road Trip to Savings, Money Metropolis, and Gen i Revolution. The students will create a presentation to explain to the class how finances impacted their choices as to where to shop, why they chose to purchase one item over another and explain how this activity will better prepare them for their future. How will you differentiate products?)Students will create a presentation that shows the students understand how personal finances can influence the decision-making process when choosing whether to purchase items. Students need to make sure that they include all the factors that can contribute to the decision-making process. Students will conduct research to gather information that can support the choices that they made as far as where to shop and what to buy. Students will be graded using one rubric for group participation and another rubric for their chosen method of presentation. Differentiation of instruction will also be considered during the assignment of family example groups to the student groups. Technology tools for presentation and scenario games will be student driven to allow for differentiation as well. The use of technology tools by students helps to prepare them for the digitized world in which they are currently living. There are several technology tools that are being used during this week long personal finance lesson. The student will use Quizlet to become familiar with the personal finance terminology. The students will use several store sites to research and compare grocery items prices such as Amazon, Walmart, and Fresh Direct. Students will use s Office 365 document to work collaboratively and collected information. The students should be familiar with and know how to use Quizlet. The students know how to work with Office 365 but may need additional assistance with how to share the document with other members of their group. The finance scenario games have how to tutorials at the beginning to assist the students. The students will be creating a presentation using a technology tool of their choice so that they can develop a presentation with a technology tool that they are comfortable with using.Resources (How does technology support student learning? What digital tools, and resources—online student tools, research sites, student handouts, tools, tutorials, templates, assessment rubrics, etc.—help elucidate or explain the content or allow students to interact with the content? What previous technology skills should students have to complete this project?)Instructional Plan Preparation (What student needs, interests, and prior learning provide a foundation for this lesson? How can you find out if students have this foundation? What difficulties might students have?)Students have studied economics throughout the school year and students have the math skill set to complete the activities in the lesson. Students have already been assessed several times throughout the school year on many of the elements of the economic standards. Results from these prior assessments indicate that the students have a firm understanding of this content material. New vocabulary and the concept of savings may require additional instructional time. Students have been using a variety of Web 2.0 tools throughout the school year on other activities for class. Students have completed and shared projects using the Office 365 tools.Management - Describe the classroom management strategies will you use to manage your students and the use of digital tools and resources. How and where will your students work? (small groups, whole group, individuals, classroom, lab, etc.) What strategies will you use to achieve equitable access to the Internet while completing this lesson? Describe what technical issues might arise during the Internet lesson and explain how you will resolve or troubleshoot them? Students will be working in small groups. Students will be using BYOD (Bring your own device) classroom desktops, and iPads to work on the lessons for the week. Students who lack access to BYOD will be provided iPads. The technical issues that I would plan for would be loss of connectivity and if some BYOD devices may not work with the websites that the students would be using. To troubleshoot those issues, I will have iPads ready for students to use so that they can access the websites and gather the information they need. If there happens to be connectivity issues, I will direct the students to work on another part of the assignment until the issue is resolved.Instructional Strategies and Learning Activities – Describe the research-based instructional strategies you will use with this lesson. How will your learning environment support these activities? What is your role? What are the students' roles in the lesson? How can you ensure higher order thinking at the analysis, evaluation, or creativity levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy? How can the technology support your teaching? What authentic, relevant, and meaningful learning activities and tasks will your students complete? How will they build knowledge and skills? How will students use digital tools and resources to communicate and collaborate with each other and others? How will you facilitate the collaboration?Students will be working together in 5 groups and this assignment incorporates the use of technology and the 4Cs communication, creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking skills. My role is to assist the students with questions that they may have regarding technology or the assignment requirements. The teacher role in this lesson is that of a facilitator. Students will conduct research online creating menu options, grocery lists, comparing prices, figuring out the best deals which requires the students to use their critical thinking skills. The students are working collaboratively in small groups to make a create product to share with the class to demonstrate their understanding of personal finance.Differentiation (How will you differentiate content and process to accommodate various learning styles and abilities? How will you help students learn independently and with others? How will you provide extensions and opportunities for enrichment? What assistive technologies will you need to provide?)In order to differentiate for my students, I use flexible grouping that focuses on learning style and ability. I will intentionally assign specific family scenarios to each group. Select students will be provided additional information to assist them with the process of analysis. I will allow students to choose the method of delivery for their presentation. I will provide select groups graphic organizers and checklists so that they make sure that they have completed the assignment in its entirety. Students can use a variety of presentation methods to share their finished product with the class.Reflection (Will there be a closing event? Will students be asked to reflect upon their work? Will students be asked to provide feedback on the assignment itself? What will be your process for answering the following questions? ?Did students find the lesson meaningful and worth completing??In what ways was this lesson effective? ?What went well and why? ?What did not go well and why? ?How would you teach this lesson differently? With this lesson students will complete feedback on the assignment through a google survey and the link will be post on Edmodo or the students can complete a written reflection at the end of the lesson. The survey questions will be constructed so that they are open ended. Students need to be able to articulate what they learned from the lesson, what activities they enjoyed or found to be the most helpful in comprehending the material, what did they dislike about the activities in the lesson, and what they thought could be improved upon. The students should also be able to identify how the activities relate to the real world. The students will reflect on the activities, but they also need to reflect on the technology and how it was used in the activities. Closure: Anything else you would like to reflect upon regarding lessons learned and/or your experience with implementing this lesson. What advice would you give others if they were to implement the lesson?Making sure that you have thoroughly instructed the students on the different types of Web 2.0 tools that are available and not blocked by the county as the students are working together and collaboratively. The group members must be on the same page as far as the technology that they are using to complete the assignments. I also needed to make sure that technology is available for student use of the course of this lesson because the groups are working at different paces.Quizlet for Money Management Vocabulary Terms: HYPERLINK "C://Users/Kathy's%20Computer/OneDrive/Documents/KSU/Spring%20Semester%202019/ITEC7430/Personal%20Finanace%20Family%20List.pdf" Family ScenariosPrintable Grocery List Surviving Motherhood One Mess at a Time.
