Naloxone Saves livesNasal spray medicine helps prevent overdose deaths ByOpioid overdose is claiming more lives than ever before. In Washington State, opioids are a leading cause of injury-related deaths. More people die from overdose than from car crashes.1 It’s a statewide crisis. But in Indian Country — where overdose rates are nearly triple the rate of any other community in Washington1 — the devastating impact of opioid-related deaths cuts even deeper. If a family member or friend is potentially at risk of opioid overdose, be prepared with naloxone.Naloxone — sold under the brand name Narcan — is a lifesaving prescription medicine that temporarily stops the deadly effects of opioids by helping a person wake up from an overdose and begin breathing again. First responders typically carry naloxone, and in Washington, anyone can carry and administer the medicine, which often comes in the form of an easy-to-use nasal spray. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, from 1996 to 2014, at least 26,500 opioid overdoses in the U.S. were reversed by laypersons using naloxone. You could be the one to save a life. Before administering naloxone, check for signs of an overdose. A person who has overdosed will have slow or no breathing, unconsciousness, blue lips or fingernails, and cool skin that’s ashy and pale. When responding to an overdose emergency, every second that passes could mean the difference between life or death. If you suspect overdose, act fast. Administer naloxone, call 911, and if the person isn’t breathing, perform rescue breaths until medical help arrives. If you want to prepare to save a life by carrying naloxone, go to the [local tribal wellness center name/other local location to learn about naloxone prescriptions], or ask a tribal behavioral health provider or law enforcement how to obtain the medicine.
