Mr. Michael Tydings Dramatic Writing for Film, Television, and Theatre I Hillgrove High School – Fall 2019michael.tydings@Course Overview: This course is designed to prepare students for a potential career in screenwriting for plays and/or tv and movies. This is a writing class, so there will be a lot of writing (kinda makes sense, huh?). We will focus on how a writer goes through several stages of writing to come to a final script. At the end of the course, you will have a full 1-act, 10-minute play AND a 15-minute screenplay, both ready to submit for professional review. If time permits, we will also work on a group screenplay. Writing will be done for a larger audience, so consistent sharing of writing in small group, whole group, and submission to writing contests is an expectation. In-class text: Blood Don’t Lie by Aaron Levy (class set provided) In-class viewing: We will watch several clips and full-length episodes of plays, tv shows, and movies to analyze from a writer’s perspective. Materials / supplies: -A book or notebook for journaling. We will use this constantly throughout the semester, so you must have it with you every day. -Flash drive or use of online drive (Office 365) -Paper and pen or pencilSenior Capstone: You are required to complete the Senior Capstone within the confines of this class. As stated in the course catalogue, you must choose a field related to the dramatic writing class. That means you can find a mentor who is involved in any facet of theatre, tv, or movie production. This may include, but is not limited to, lighting, stage make-up, set design, writing, editing, etc. Specific due dates will be handed out in class and posted on my website. The Capstone is worth 20% of a student’s final grade. 10% is devoted to the research paper and 10% for the presentation and showcase. In order to receive credit for the showcase, the student must present. Class Policies / Procedures: Make-up work is per the Hillgrove handbook policy (you get the number of days you missed + 1 to turn in work). It is your responsibility to find out what you missed, not mine, so be sure to read the blog. I will not accept work from a previous unit once we start the next unit Students must schedule time after school to complete missed work. Unless otherwise specified, all assignments are due at the beginning of the class period. Those not turned in at that time will be considered late. If there is a scheduled assignment due and you know you will not be in class that day, you are required to email that assignment to the instructor. Per school policy (dead time), students are not allowed to leave the room for any reason 15 min. after class has begun and 15 min. prior to the end of the period. Food and drink are allowed (not slushies from the cafeteria). If a mess is left behind, I will put the class on a food ban. Be to class on time. If you are not in the room when the bell rings, you are to get a late pass--no exceptions.Unless offered to the entire class, there is no such animal as extra credit.I expect your best effort at all times. A positive attitude is the most important thing that you can bring to class. Your participation in discussion is vital to the success of this course. As such, please, be courteous to those speaking in class. Everyone’s ideas are important, and there are no unimportant questions.
