DORAL ACADEMY PREPARATORY SCHOOLLANGUAGE ARTS 7TH GRADE SYLLABUSMRS. ILSE CARDELLEICARDELLE@Course OverviewWelcome to 7th grade Language Arts! This year you will use StudySync to work with several themes, and you will be exposed to a myriad of sources from literary novels to poetry, art, and music. Throughout this course you will focus on improving your reading and writing skills in order to master FSA/SAT/ACT writing examinations. The GOAL is to make you well versed in various texts and writing styles that predominantly focus on evidentiary-based writing. In addition, we will cover vocabulary, grammar, and oral presentations throughout the year.Required Materials5 subject notebook (has dividers built in) with pockets, or binder with 5 tabs and looseleafFolder with pockets for loose papers, handouts, etc.Pens (black or blue and red)Highlighter$5 textbook fee (paid online after September/October) *If you lose your workbook, you will be charged a $20 replacement feePaperback novels to buy (listed by quarter-you can purchase all 3 at once, or one per quarter-I listed Amazon Prime price):The Miracle Worker: A Play by William Gibson- $7.98 (Quarter 1)The Giver by Lois Lowry-(Quarter 2)-around $8The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton (Quarter 3)-around $8NOTE: Novels are not allowed on ipads, iphones, or Kindles. Hard copies only because we will be learning/re-learning how to annotate each text. I will give students a two week warning that the novels need to be purchased before beginning to read.Classroom Rules and ProceduresI follow all the school rules, and I expect that the students will, too. I am here to teach, and they are here to learn. Anything that interferes with that will mean that there will be consequences, such as a verbal warning at first, then a student conference, then a parent conference, then a parent/counselor conference, and finally, an administrative disciplinary action. I have been a teacher for 29 years, and I have had very few parent conferences due to behavior. Of course, in case of an extreme situation, I may skip all the steps and refer the student to Administration immediately.Grading BreakdownTests-40%Projects/Essays-30%Quizzes (*Reading Plus is a weekly quiz grade, there may be others)-20%Classwork/Homework-10%Reading PlusAll students that attend Doral Academy Prep (6th-8th) are REQUIRED to complete Reading Plus to help with Reading Literacy and Comprehension, and to acquire superior levels of vocabulary. The assignments are listed weekly on an online page and must be completed by each Friday at 9 p.m. (a green check mark will appear next to each assignment as it is completed). Reports will be looked at Monday and will count as a weekly quiz grade. The grading breakdown for Reading Plus is as follows:An A for weekly assignments completed with 80% comprehension score or higherAn F for weekly assignments completed with less than 80% comprehension scoreA Z (zero) for incomplete assignments-assignments MUST be 100% completedOther HomeworkI realize that students have busy lives, and Reading Plus is already a homework assignment for me, but occasionally I may assign other homework, especially when we are reading our novel. I try not to assign homework “just because.” I post any homework on my page at . One of the first homework assignments I will give the students is to bring a completed and signed copy of this syllabus to school before August 23. Students can always email me if they have any questions before 9 p.m. please! I will not be looking at my emails/phone after that time.PLEASE FILL OUT THIS FORM THAT YOU HAVE READ AND UNDERSTAND THE POLICIES AND EXPECTATIONS FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR.
