HYUNDAI SPOT RANKED TOPS FOR SUPER BOWL

SIX AUTO COMMERCIALS IN TOP 10

Hyundai claimed its first-ever victory in the USA Today Ad Meter panel ranking of the Super Bowl Commercials. Humor was in this year and the panelists decided that Hyundai did it best. The “First Date” spot featured comedian Kevin Hart (pictured) as an over-protective dad letting his teenage daughter’s date use his new Hyundai Genesis—and then using the built-in “car finder” app to follow them everywhere they go.

USA Today expanded its panel by 183% this year, with more than 19,000 panelists across the country voting on all 63 ads which ran nationally in the CBS broadcast. Valeant Pharmaceuticals had the dubious distinction of claiming last place and next-to-last for spots promoting its Jublia (#63) and Xifaxan (#62) products.

Budweiser, which had won the previous two years with puppy-themed commercials, decided that cute puppies didn’t really sell beer. It dropped back to #9 this year with a spot that featured British actress Helen Mirren berating anyone who drives drunk and only incidentally lifting a bottle of Bud. By the way, Budweiser’s 2014 “Puppy Love” spot was recently named the best Super Bowl commercial of all time in a USA Today poll sponsored by Adobe.

Dogs worked well for Heinz this year, claiming the #2 spot in Ad Meter rankings with “Weiner Stampede”—featuring a herd of Dachshunds in hot-dog outfits licking people dressed as Heinz ketchup and mustard.

The winner of the last annual “Crash the Super Bowl” create a commercial contest by Doritos featured three shelter dogs and won $1 million and a dream film job for 29-year-old Jacob Chase. Perhaps strangely, the spot was beaten in the Ad Meter voting by the contest runner-up, with “Ultrasound” by Peter Carstairs ranked #3 and Chase’s “Dogs” #4.

Six of the top 10 Super Bowl spots were from car brands—and Hyundai had an exceptionally successful day. Not only did it have the #1 spot, but #5 and #6 as well. Honda claimed #7, Audi #8 and Toyota #10.

Kelley Blue Book reported that the Audi R8 increased 7,780% in new car searches on after its spot aired—the biggest boost of any car brand. Kia Optima searches were up 496% and Hyundai Genesis 400%.

Although expectations are still optimistic for another strong year in automotive sales, one important segment that has been lagging is the high-profit luxury brands. For those brands, trucks have replaced cars as the majority of sales, and Automotive News reports that with China suffering an economic slowdown, manufacturers have been sending more vehicles to the U.S., creating an inventory glut for some dealers. TrueCar has reported a corresponding large jump in incentives, including a 26% incentive increase by Lexus last month and an 18% increase for BMW…… Hasbro reported a better-than-expected quarter, mostly due to Star Wars-themed toys. Because of the movie, its Boys segment was up 35%, offsetting a 17% decline in its Girls division. The Games segment was up 11%......While one very popular supermarket, Rochester, NY-based Wegman’s slowly expands southward down the Atlantic coast, Lakeland, FL-based Publix is expanding northward in the same region, announcing plans for its first stores in Virginia. Publix says it’s planning for “aggressive growth” in both new and existing markets. Wegman’s is opening its first store in North Carolina this year……Kirkland’s reported a small same-store sales increase for its fiscal fourth quarter (up 1.3% over an 8.2% gain in the prior year’s corresponding quarter) and it blamed weather for keeping shoppers away in January. For the full fiscal year, comps were up 2.9%. Kirkland’s opened 43 stores and closed 11 during the fiscal year……Walmart will take over operation of its gas stations, which had been mostly operated by Murphy USA. It’s part of a plan to use gas to drive traffic and sales at Walmart stores and a spokesperson says Walmart will “put fuel stations in as many locations as we can”……Murphy USA, however, is expanding on its own, with plans for 60-80 new stores this year (and entry into three new states—Nebraska, Nevada, and Utah) on top of the current 1,111 c-stores and 224 Murphy Express locations……Also in the c-store business, Speedway has completed the conversion of the former Hess stations it bought well ahead of the original schedule. For the full year, Speedway reported a profit of $673 million compared to $544 million in 2014 obviously helped by better margins on fuel……Food Management Partners had acquired Ovation Brands last August (the former Buffets, Inc. had gone bankrupt twice in the last decade) and has now announced plans to close 74 of the 328 locations it acquired. Affected banners include Old Country Buffet, Hometown Buffet, Fire Mountain and Country Buffet. FMP took a similar tack after it acquired the Catalina Restaurant Group last year, closing more than half of Catalina’s Coco’s and Carrows locations.

NETWORK NEWS

CBS is set to wrap up The Good Wife, using a promo during the Super Bowl to announce that the series finale will air Sunday, May 8, at 9:00 pm (ET). The series starring Julianna Margulies has aired for seven seasons……ABC has given a series order to Big Fan. The half-hour weekly comedic game show will be hosted by Andy Richter. Late-night television host, writer, and producer Jimmy Kimmel teams with Banijay Studios North America to produce. Big Fan is based on the “Who Knows…?” the celebrity vs. super-fan game segment that originally aired on Jimmy Kimmel Live. The segment became a viral video success when pop star Katy Perry went up against one of her biggest fans—and lost. Each episode of the half-hour, studio-based game show will feature one celebrity and three of his or her biggest super fans. The super fans will go head-to-head to see who knows more about the episode’s featured celebrity……The Last Man on Earth will make its spring premiere on FOX with all-new episodes, beginning Sunday, March 6, at 9:30 pm (ET). That same day Bordertown, the new animated series, will move to the Sunday, 7:00 pm (ET) time slot.

SUNDAY RATINGS

As usual, the Super Bowl dwarfed the competition in Sunday primetime as they mostly ran reruns to stay out of the line of fire. CBS, with Super Bowl 50, the Post-Game and the start of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert posted an average 32.0 rating in Adults 18-49 in the Nielsen overnights, along with a 39.7 in Households and an average 93.617 million viewers. NBC, with Dateline, was well back at 0.5 18-49, 1.2 HH and 1.808 million; FOX 0.4 18-49, 0.5 HH and 0.896 million; Univision 0.4 18-49, 0.7 HH and 1.194 million; ABC 0.3 18-49, 1.1 HH and 1.793 million; and Telemundo 0.3 18-49, 0.4 HH and 0.687 million.

SUPER BOWL MOST WATCHED EVER

Super Bowl 50 on CBS—featuring the Denver Broncos’ 24-10 win over the Carolina Panthers—was the most watched single broadcast in television history. The Nielsen Fast Nationals pegged the audience at a record 167.0 million Persons 2+ who watched all or part of the broadcast. The previous high was CBS’s coverage of Super Bowl XLVII in 2013 (Baltimore Ravens-San Francisco 49ers)—at 164.1 million.

BIG GAME BOOSTED LATE NIGHT SHOWS

Given the prime slot following the Super Bowl, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert drew the biggest audience ever for The Late Show on CBS, even topping David Letterman’s post-Olympics broadcasts in February 1994. Sunday night’s special live show, airing from 10:54 pm to 12:02 am (ET), averaged 21.21 million viewers.

Following a break for local news, The Late Show with James Corden averaged 4.97 million viewers. That was a record high for the show, beating the previous mark of 4.26 million for the 2013 post-Super Bowl edition hosted by Craig Ferguson.

VERIZON SEEKS YAHOO FOR CONTENT

Verizon is no longer just about providing phone and broadband connections. The company made its first big foray into owning content last year with its $4.4 billion purchase of AOL. Now it is seen as the likely buyer of struggling Yahoo.

“At the right price, I think marrying up some of their assets with AOL and the leadership would be good,” CEO Lowell McAdam said on CNBC’s Mad Money.

Bloomberg reported that AOL CEO Tim Armstrong has been put in charge of weighing a potential acquisition of Yahoo. The report also says there haven’t been any talks yet, but Armstrong’s involvement makes it clear that Verizon is serious about trying to buy Yahoo’s Internet business.

Adding Yahoo would be part of a larger effort by Verizon to own more of the content it delivers to 112 million phone subscribers. The Verge says Yahoo brings in more than 1 billion visitors to its homepage, video sites, sports and finance portals, and email service. That traffic, together with Yahoo's Brightroll ad platform, would give Verizon a bigger pool of controlled content it can monetize with mobile video ads, a territory dominated by YouTube and Facebook at the moment.

81% HAVE A DVR, NETFLIX, OR USE VOD

New consumer research from Leichtman Research Group (LRG) found that 81% of U.S. households have a DVR, get Netflix, or use on-demand (VOD) from a cable or Telco provider—with 30% of households using two of the services, and 13% using all three.

The survey also found that 57% of households get a subscription video on-demand (SVOD) service from Netflix, Amazon Prime and/or Hulu. Overall, 48% of adults stream any of these services on a monthly basis.

The survey of 1,214 households found that 77% of ages 18-24 stream an SVOD service monthly—compared to 63% of ages 25-44, 50% of ages 45-54, and 23% of ages 55+. 37% of all adults stream Netflix weekly—compared to 8% in 2010. And 83% of Netflix streaming users watch Netflix on a TV set.

LRG says 64% of pay-TV subscribers have a DVR—compared to 45% in 2010. 74% of all Telco video subscribers and 61% of all cable subscribers have ever used VOD from their current provider. 51% of all cable subscribers used VOD in the past month—compared to 34% in 2010.

“In 2005, 25% of cable subscribers had ever used VOD, 8% of all households had a DVR, and about 4% of households subscribed to Netflix’s DVD-by-mail movie delivery service. These services have significantly evolved over the past decade,” said LRG president and principal analyst Bruce Leichtman.
