Group Research Project

Group Research ProjectFor this project, you will work with an assigned group of your peers to design and implement a research/data gathering project to identify and interview a selected community (academic, public, business, legislative, etc.) to study discourses on and about sustainability and the future. Professional artists will use the research/data you gather to create artistic representations of your findings, which will be put on display for the community. The project consists of several steps:CITI Training: You will become certified in CITI training () in human subjects research for social and behavioral study. A representative from ASU's Institutional Review Board (IRB) will give a workshop in class on January 10.Group Assignment: Early in the semester, you will be assigned to a theme-based group (Fire, Water, Earth, Air, or Spirit). Your group will work together to identify a particular community (e.g. students, a specific industry, etc.) and a particular issue connected to your theme as it relates to sustainability and the future (e.g. water rights, endangered species protection, climate change, etc.) that you wish to study. You may interpret your assigned theme as literally or as creatively as you ic Proposal: Your group will submit a topic proposal to Dr. Goggin and Ms. Churg that identifies the issue and community you plan to study, sets forth your intended methods for doing so, demonstrates that the project is doable (considering geographic, time, and resource constraints), and explains how your proposed study explores/sheds light on discourses on and about sustainability and the future. Due February 5.Study Design: Your group will design a study of the community and issue you select: What data will you collect? How will you collect and record it? (Videotape? Audio-recording?) How many people within your chosen community will you interview? What information are you trying to obtain through your interviews? What sorts of questions will you ask? (Yes/no, multiple choice, open-ended, or a combination?) Will you ask all interviewees the same set of predetermined questions, or improvise different follow-up questions depending on the responses you receive? How will you synthesize/organize your findings to make them meaningful? (Are you looking for trends in interviewee responses? Noteworthy words/phrases that you feel capture interviewees’ views particularly well? Etc.)Study Implementation: Once approved, your group will work together to conduct your study.Blackboard Group Journal: Throughout this process, your group will post on Blackboard a detailed weekly log of activities, problems, discoveries, questions, processes, and progress as you design and implement your group project. All class members will have access to the logs and should post responses, questions, and suggestions to each other's groups. Groups should share responsibility for weekly postings and updates. Note that this is a required assignment for credit and will be assessed for consistency and content. Weekly postings must be made by noon each Sunday to count for credit for the previous week.PowerPoint Presentation: Your group will create a visual representation of your project and present it to the class and interested ASU community members. ASU offers templates and guides for PowerPoint presentations available at: . You may include charts, photographs, text, etc.—whatever you feel best represents and explains your project. Due April 26. ................
