This AARP Fraud and Scam Presentation will include:

Fraud Trends and Behavior – Understanding how much fraud is out there and the behavior that puts people at risk.

The Con Artist’s Playbook – Understanding the strategy and tactics used by con artists to defraud.

Prevention – Know and practice the most effective prevention strategies to avoid becoming a victim, recognize the “red flags” and report them.

Resources – How to access and share up-to-date information about fraud identification and prevention and where to go if a person becomes a victim.

SEACOAST MEMORIAL LECTURE -

"Whales and Nations: Environmental Diplomacy on the High Seas” -Scientific uncertainty is often cited by global climate change skeptics as a reason for opposing laws or

treaties designed to address rising levels of greenhouse

gases. Prof. Kurk Dorsey, UNH, will analyze how scientific uncertainty played a critical role in the first global environmental diplomatic negotiations: efforts to regulate whaling on the high seas.  Proponents of reducing whaling

often found themselves stymied by disagreement over what exactly was going on with whale populations as well as by

the unknowns of whale biology. Prof. Dorsey will analyze the parallels with climate change diplomacy and assess the chances that the recent Paris Climate Accords will be considered successful in the long run.

“Saving Coral Reefs” Tuesday, April 12 - 1:30 PM Yasmeen Smalley, underwater photographer, science communicator, and Vice President of The Hydrous, a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing coral reefs to life. She is a professional underwater photographer, Women Divers Hall of Fame recipient, Rolex Our World Underwater Scholar, and Explorer Club member.

Members are notified, via e-mail, with current program changes, cancellations, but only if you have signed up for the service. Yellow e-mail registration cards are available at all General Meetings from the Membership Director.

If the Oyster River School District cancels school, Programs (including Kittery) will be cancelled for weather-related conditions. Members should check their e-mail, or the ARA website or listen to radio station WTSN, 1270 AM, Dover; WHEB, 750 AM, 100.3 FM, Portsmouth; or WMYF, 1380 AM, Portsmouth; or

tune to WMUR, Channel 9.

February 24 – "Who's the 'US' in US Health Care?" – Dr. Rosemary Caron received the 2015 Outstanding Associate Professor award for her superior teaching, research and service in health management and policy at the UNH College of Health and Human Services.

March 2 – "The Art & Heart of Hospice" – Family Nurse Practitioner and author, Lynn Delvin, is a specialist in Hospice and Palliative Care who will talk about the team-support and care that is the specialty of this end-of-life organization.

March 9 – "Doctors & Patience" – Self-Advocacy Lynn Devlin returns to explain how to be the best self-advocate when being treated for illness by physician and/or hospital and how game-changing it can be.

March 16 – "Continuing Care" – RiverWoods CEO, Justine Vogel, and Cathleen Toomey, VP of Marketing will explain the structure of the 3 major types of Continuing Care Retirement Communities, including costs and questions to ask if considering a CCRC. The "Insider's Guide" workbook will be a valuable handout to attendees.

February 24 – "Tai Chi" – Mona Pinette - Instructor Mona Pinette teaches us the magical Eastern stress-reducer often called "moving medication".

March 2 – "Meditation" – Our stress-free Sandy Bonin invites you to learn about this popular restorative art. We will practice simple techniques to calm our minds and reduce stress effects. No experience needed!

March 9 –"Music-Driven Movement" - Prof. Deborah Kinghorn of the UNH Theater & Dance Department asks "When You Walk, Do You Feel Like Dancing?" as she helps us learn how to keep that spring in our steps through breathing, stretching and shaking. Exploring connections between music and movement, mind and soul in a "senior-active" way.

March 16 – "Gentle Chair Yoga" – Carol Walker, certified yoga instructor, leads us beginners through intermediate exercises. Stretch the body, stretch the mind.

February 25 – "Who Are We:" – Sociology Prof. Kenneth M. Johnson is senior demographer at the Carsey School of Public Policy and a "nationally recognized expert on U.S. demographic trends" in population redistribution, rural and urban drifts, racial diversity of the U.S. population, and the relationship between demographic and environmental change.

March 3 – "What's 'Free' about Freestaters?"– With thousands of Freestater ideologues moving into the Live Free or Die state, former Editorial Page Editor of the Union-Leader, Drew Cline, tells us why they are relocating to NH.

March 10 – "Who Judges the Judges?"" – Famed UNH Law Prof. John Greabe tells us how judicial activism can be measured, whether it is a bad thing, and whether we are in an era marked by undue judicial activism (with a focus on the US Supreme Court).

March 17 – "Unclogging the Courts" – Maine State Mediator, and former Connecticut real estate attorney, Bill Selsberg*, explains how his current mission clears court calendars.

February 25 – "WWII Chapter 2" – Our President, Bob Hylen, gives us another brilliant look and analysis of WWII from D-Day through Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge, and across the Ludendorff Bridge at Remagen into Germany.

March 3 – "Death With Dignity" – Many states are considering End of Life legislation currently legal in only 5 states. Our Ret. Assoc. Prof. Michael O'Sullivan will explore the ethical and legal issues of this legislation, what they mean, and how they affect us.

March 10 – "Serious Funny Cartoons" – A collection of political cartoons to view and chew on. We'll talk amongst ourselves.

March 17 – "Body Language" – We'll watch the top-rated TED (Technology, Entertainment & Design) Amy Cuddy "talk", and discuss her not-so-hidden meaning of our physical movements.

March 30 – "Judith & Polly" – Judith Custer* loves drawing in pen and ink, portraits, pastels, acrylics and watercolor. Polly McDonough* does tole painting, gold-leafing, stenciling. They will show their acclaimed artwork and share the process that drives them.

April 6 – "Sex & Sensibility Chic Lit-Jane Austen to Bridget Jones" – UNH Lit Prof. Stephanie Harzewski has a unique perspective on the evolution of women in literature.

April 13 – "Pat & Karl" Tomorrow – View the works and hear the motivation of noted multimedia driftwood, pottery, basketry artist, our own Pat DeGrandpre*, who shares the "stage" with watercolor, landscape painter and former NY commercial artist, longtime member, Karl Zembrusky*.

April 20 – "Old Guy Part One" – A 46-year career at UNH, retired English Professor Tom Carnicelli has written a book of poems about retirement and aging that will touch us all.

March 31 – "Inside the Moose Outside" – Pete Pekins, nationally recognized UNH Prof. of Wildlife Ecology explains the alarming ecological decline of New Hampshire's Moose population from winter ticks, lower births and global warming.

April 7 – "How old is Earth? When did life begin?" – How did we humans get here? UNH Marine Docent Brian Fitzgerald* introduces us to our family tree and the evolution of the particular traits that make us human while exploring deep time and the evolution of life over the last four billion years.

April 14 – "Advocates, Agendas and Science Naysayers" – UNH Chemistry Prof. Art Greenberg separates fact from foolish fable like "totally organic food", children's inoculations, and home energy while explaining how to judiciously consider data credibility bombarding us every day.

April 21 – "Environmental Hits & Misses" – International rock star, Civil and Environmental Engineering Prof. Nancy Kinner, is director of the Coastal Response Research Center that partners with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). She will share her groundbreaking work with us.

April 14 – "Oysters & Clams – Spinney Creek Shellfish can be found on menus from coast to coast. Lori Howell tells you how the life in her day has made the family company a gourmet brand.

April 21 – "Stay-At-Home Dads" – Dads will share a typical day in their unique domestic trench and will tell us what they have in common as well as how their days differ from others while offering "selfies" of family life in the 20-teens.
