New “waterproof” cable junction boxes for encapsulation – even for use under water

Hensel presents the new generation of the ENYCASE cable junction boxes in waterproof design for extreme environmental conditions. Using the same advantages of the “weatherproof” ENYCASE cable junction boxes for outdoor installation, they now cover one more area of application.

Electricians regulary encounter installation environments wherein the ingress of water and formation of condensed water inside of an enclosure must be safely excluded. Even enclosures with a high degree of protection cannot guarantee this. Even cable junction boxes with a degree of protection IP 68 cannot prevent damaging amounts of water in the interior through cummulation of condensation. And measures for ventilation cannot be implemented everywhere. Cable junction boxes must be waterproof when installed in potentially flooded areas in a sub-surface location, in outdoor ground-level cable ducts, in flooding zones near rivers, harbors or underpasses, or in unprotected outdoor installations on ground level.

Hensel, specialist and market leader for cable junction boxes made of plastics, is presenting a new generation of “waterproof” cable junction boxes in four sizes and various designs in either black or grey.

“Waterproof” for encapsulation but still accessible

ENYCASE cable junction boxes are "waterproof" by encapsulation in compliance with the DIN VDE V 0606-22-100 standard for use in extreme areas of application. The durable elastic, silicone-free sealing compound used for encapsulation entirely prevents the ingress of water and formation of condensed water inside the enclosure.

The encapsulated cable junction boxes also provide reliable protection against shock and vibration. The strain relief is being realized by cable glands.

The sealing compound is characterised by excellent insulating properties. Since the compound is transparent, a visual inspection of the installation can be done at any time. Electrical connections can also be tested under encapsulation, as the durable elastic material is self-sealing. The sealing compound can be easily removed for repairs, reinstallation, or modifications to the installation. It is recommended to use materials that are tested for this purpose only, as safety and durability are not guaranteed when using not qualified materials, e.g. silicone from the construction market.

New enclosure design offers multiple benefits

Many details have been optimised in comparison to the previous generation of cable junction boxes. The most striking one is the design of the enclosures which offers several benefits.

The elegant and smooth polycarbonate enclosure is even more robust and offers plenty of space for wiring. The enclosures are flame-retardant and successfully passed the glow wire test at 960°C.

The enclosure can be quickly opened and closed with only one quarter turn. The shape of the enclosure enables the electrician to immediately inspect whether all locks are closed properly.

The external brackets for fastening, that are always included in the scope of supply are particularly advantageous for encapsulated applications.

Multi-level knockouts for cable entries in different sizes adapted to the nominal cross-sections of the cable glands allow the use of applicable cable cross-sections.

Terminals designed for ultimate flexibility

In particular, the newly developed terminals with two clamping units per pole are unique. The screw-type terminals are suitable to connect different conductor types and cross-sections. Thanks to the terminal technology of two clamping units per pole, various conductor cross-sections and types can be connected without using any extra measures. Terminals prevent damage of conductors, also for flexible conductors without ferrule. This saves time and reduces costs.

Variable terminal positions are another highlight. Due to their high-position terminals keep free accessible for cables inserted into the junction boxes. At the same time, there is more space available, even with the maximum number of fitted cables. This enables the optimal terminal position for quick and easy wiring.
