FORUM: Environment CommissionQUESTION OF: Measures to Reduce the Adverse Impact of Single-use Plastics and Microplastics on the Global Terrestrial and Marine EnvironmentMAIN-SUBMITTED BY: AngolaCO-SUBMITTED BY: Iran, Libya, Netherlands, Russian Federation, Zimbabwe, Finland, DPRK, Italy, China, CanadaTHE ENVIRONMENT COMMISSION, Alarmed by the substantial magnitude of approximately 8 million metric tons of single-use plastics and microplastics dumped into the ocean annually around the globe, most of which are emanating from prosperous and thriving countries such as China and Indonesia, which engender and waste plastic bottles, food containers, and drink containers, Fully aware of the devastating impacts that single-use plastics and microplastics had towards the environment, such as releasing toxic chemicals and marine animals mistaking plastic for its food and consuming this, therefore damaging their internal organs, killing approximately 100,000 marine animals annually, Emphasizing the threatening influences single-use and microplastics will most certainly have in the world shortly, such as the formation of an “Eighth Continent”, a giant pile of plastic from around the world, plastic outweighing the aquatic life by 2050, marine animals going extinct, and less oxygen and dihydrogen monoxide supply for humans as the oceans gradually but indeed get polluted more and more, Applauding the ambitious efforts of India and its prime minister Narendra Modi for issuing a ban on single-use plastics in New Delhi while pledging to eliminate plastic waste throughout the nation by 2022, Realizing the inability of Earth soil to decompose plastics, resulting in the contamination of soil,Fully aware that the primary sources of marine plastic are land-predicated, such as urban and storm runoff, sewer overflows, inadequate waste disposal and management, industrial activities, construction, and illicit dumping, Astonished that floating plastics additionally contribute to the spread of invasive marine organisms and bacteria, which disrupt ecosystems,Reinforces actions to reduce single-use plastics among all nations in ways such as:requesting More Economically Developed Countries (MEDCs) to reduce all the avoidable use of plastic products by passing laws such as only allowing:bags, cups, or bottles made of glass or paper instead of plastic in cafes and grocery stores, paper straws instead of single-use plastic straws, paper bags or cloth bags instead of plastic shopping bags;Encouraging all member states to initiate plastic taxation for industries in a call rate of approximately $0.92/kilogramme of non-recycled plastics to:reduce plastic manufacturing, increase the price of plastic products, leading to reductions in plastic product productions and therefore reducing plastic waste, requesting relevant parties and governments to pass laws which requires factories to produce plastic goods that do not contain or release a reasonable amount of toxic chemicals that are harmful to the environment and the human body, such as dioxins, phthalates, vinyl chloride, ethylene dichloride, lead, and cadmium;Encourages all individuals, organizations, and member states to advertise the importance of plastic recycling and inform all citizens of the irreversible consequences of plastic over-usage in the following ways but not limited to: creating related documentaries, further incorporating situations related to plastic in various news channels, utilizing powers of celebrities to further the increase awareness of the adverse impact of plastics in ways such as:creating a fashion trend centering around the topic of recycling, advertising ways to recycle plastic and asking people not to use plastic, further propagating information about plastic overusing and urging people not to use plastic on popular social media platforms such as:WeChat,Facebook,Twitter,Instagram;Emphasizes the effect of tourism on plastic pollution and asks the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) to develop more sustainable tourism in ways such as but not limited to:liminating the unnecessary overpackaging in gift shops or food trucks dedicated for tourists, setting up recycling stations at the most populated places, strengthening and emphasizing regulations of littering in tourists attraction by: developing punishments such as fining and banning the access of visiting traveling hotspots for tourists who were caught littering, establishing reminders around popular places to prevent tourists from littering, slowly move towards all plastic packaging to be reusable, recyclable, and compostable;Calls upon all nations to educate young individuals about plastic pollution in ways such as but not limited to:incorporating environment classes that include lessons related to plastic overusing in the curriculum of primary and secondary schools, providing free online classes made by universities for younger individuals to introduce how to reduce, reuse, and recycle plastics, improving the importance of environmental science disciplines in universities;proposing the creation of a worldwide organization for young adults in which participants will be gathered regionally and be required to:volunteer to recycle plastic trash, participate in meetings held weekly in discussing the local situation about plastic and how to recycle it,Urges member states to develop alternative resources that can be used instead of plastic which are environment-friendly and has long shelf life by:asking governments and relevant parties to aid scientists in searching for new innovations such as: biodegradable plastics,plastic-eating microbes,plant-based bioplastics, materials not yet found that can replace plastic, asking member states to cooperate with the Global Plastic Action Partnership to initiate a worldwide innovation award for scientists to encourage them to search for new innovations related to plastic;Encourages relevant parties and governments to offer financial aid and give technical help to Less Economically Developed Countries (LEDCs) to help them improve upon areas such as but not limited to:plastic waste collection systems, wastewater treatment, alternative environment-friendly resources. ................
