HRM 5385- Organization Consultation

NOVA Southeastern University

October 21, 2012

Organization Big Time is a Virtual Management company which provides consulting services in the areas of business, management, organizational change, and organizational leadership. They have built a very strong brand name in their 20 year history through their services. However, they found a need to grow and change their specialization to the field of Human Resources Management (HRM). For this purpose, a SWOT Analysis will be developed to help them in their expansion to access the new consulting market.

Considering their strengths, Organization Big Time is one of the only three companies providing services in the area of Virtual Management and has a good reputation within the market. The company has been in business for 20 years and has a good client base servicing Fortune 500 companies. They have a profitable position in the market, making over 300 million in profits last year, and an increase of 20% in their previous year’s profits. Also, the company had accomplished objectives and success because of the good performance, productivity, and loyalty of its employees. This is a company that values its employees as their most important asset and believes employee retention is critical to the long term success of their business. They have sustained their workforce during their 20 year history. Organization Big Time possesses the capabilities, expertise and knowledge of their employees in their former areas of specialization. All of these make part of their competitive advantage.

Some of the weaknesses or characteristics that place them at a disadvantage include their lack of planning for the transition to a new and unknown market for them. The company has little market presence or reputation in the new field. In addition, their organizational website is not current and they would need to design a new website with a description of the new services they offer. They have used the same organizational website created by the vice president’s 17 year-old son for 4 years and last updated in February 2008. The company needs to develop a new marketing strategy to match the specific needs of the new field. Currently, they have few major clients since they are expanding to a new market, HRM, in which they have not gained reputation yet. The organization needs to build a stronger customer base. The company’s strategy and business objectives need to change to focus on the new line of business. They need to inform their employees what the organization is looking to accomplish and encourage them to make their best effort. Also, Organization Big Time must improve their internal organizational structure by adding a Marketing Department and hiring professionals with the expertise, skills, and knowledge in HRM to be able to provide an outstanding service and match or beat competitors.

Due to the changes and demands in the marketplace, the company would have the opportunity or chance to grow, achieve future success, and increase profits by entering the new market and expanding their services. Moving to the HRM field which is an area in demand and having provided service to a recognized client in such field, the Society of Human Resources Managers (SHRM) will help them gain recognition in the market niche and build a strong client base. They would be able to gain a well established position with a well defined and in demand market niche. Also, they may take advantage of their reputation and brand name in Virtual Management to get recommendations from their former Fortune 500 employers or clients. Their goal will be to achieve a competitive advantage in the new field.

Organization Big Time will face different external threats that could cause difficulties for their business including the developments in technology which the organization needs to keep abreast of in order to achieve competitiveness in the market. Also, they need to consider competition from other small consulting companies looking to invade the HRM consulting marketplace since the field is gaining popularity and is in high demand.

As a result of the SWOT Analysis, the company must plan and develop a strategy that helps them distinguish from their competitors, so that they can compete successfully and gain a bigger slice in the HR consulting market. They must focus on their strengths, overcome weaknesses, minimize threats, and take the greatest possible advantage of opportunities available to them (MindTools, 2012).

Organization Big Time needs to better plan their transition to the new field. They need to study and survey the target market because currently, there are many competitors in the HRM field. They can double their current earnings in the next five years by differentiating and creating greater demand of their services. They need to hire professionals in the HRM field in order to achieve their current goal of providing better consulting service. The company needs to stay abreast and use technological advances as a tool to offer their new approach. They need to update and improve their current organizational website in order to advertise their new consulting services, build and reinforce the corporate brand around the market, and capture more clientele. The new site will require a new architecture and design by a professional in technology and marketing. Also, use social networking tools such as Blogs, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter to share a great amount of information in a fast and cost-effective way. They need more and different marketing strategies including direct mail which will involve sending postcards and brochures to highlight information about the new service area. They can also use recommendations or word of mouth from former clients.
