Fairbanks, Alaska A Climate Almanac

History of Climate Observations at Fairbanks

Cooperative climate observations were initiated in Fairbanks by the Rev. Hudson Stuck on September !, "#$!. Observations were made with Weather Bureau supplied equipment by personnel a%liated with the Episcopal Church through June, "#"", when the station was relocated to the Agricultural Experiment Station four miles west-northwest of the city.

The Weather Bureau o%ce was established in the summer of "#&# in the Horseshoe Building at the corner of First and Cushman Street. In July, "#'' the o%ce was moved to the new Federal Building on the corner of Second and Cushman Street. Except for July through November "#'', temperatures were measured at site on the south bank of the Chena River. In July, "#!&, weather and climate observations were moved to Ladd Field (later Fort Wainwright), and then in May, "#!' to Weeks Field (near the site of the present-day Noel Wien Library). On August &&, "#(", all observation programs were removed to the Fairbanks International Airport, where they have remained through the present. Instrument locations have been changed many times on the airport grounds. The current ASOS system, located near the southwest end of the main runway, was commissioned on December ", "##).

The data collected during the &( years prior to the start of Weather Bureau operations are of variable quality and in some extreme cases are demonstrably in error. Since December, "#&#, observations are of high quality, though the many changes in instrument location, exposure and the extreme sensitivity of temperature to local micro-topography create a disconcertingly heterogeneous record. The climatological day begins and ends at midnight local standard time except for snowfall between December "#&# and December "#'#, when the daily amounts are for the &! hours ending at &pm Alaska ("($th Meridian) Time.

A Fairbanks Climate Almanac compiles daily climate variable extremes since December, "#&# *om publicly available information. In the few cases where monthly extremes are reliably exceeded in the "#$!-"#&# record, these are so noted. Solar data is calculated for Fairbanks International Airport latitude +!? !#N, longitude "!)? (&W. Times have been rounded to the minute.
