How to Cite Sources

Single author named in parentheses with page number, when quoting directly.

In chapter three, we could see that Jim Hawkins was beginning to mature, “Of course I said I would go with my mother; and of course they all cried out at our foolhardiness; but even then not a man would go along with us” (Stevenson 28).

Single author named in a signal phrase.

The author of Treasure Island, Robert Louis Stevenson, used death as a way to advance the plot. This was evident in chapter three when he stated that Billy Bones had died quite suddenly of a stroke (25). (Paraphrased)

Robert Louis Stevenson stated in chapter three that, “The captain had been struck dead by thundering apoplexy” (25).

Note: I changed the words in the chapter around, and gave it my own spin. I still need to give credit to the source of these thoughts and/or ideas.

Works with no author.

When a source has no known author, use a shortened title of the work instead of an author name. Place the title in quotation marks if it's a short work (e.g. articles) or italicize it if it's a longer work (e.g. plays, books, television shows, entire websites) and provide a page number.

There was an apparent theme throughout the story of Treasure Island, friendship vs. greed ("Themes of Treasure Island" 115).
