Classroom Management

Activity 4: Arranging the Classroom

Activity:

1. Review the model classroom designs shown below based on the keys of good room arrangement. Write comments on each model and share comments in class discussion.

2. Assign students to work in groups of four based on grade level or subject area. Have each group design a classroom based on grade level or subject following the keys of good classroom design. Label items in the classroom. Don’t forget about storage spaces and bookshelves. Websites are available for students to use to create a classroom. These can be located through a search engine that locates “classroom design on line”. Students can use graph paper to design a classroom. Another option is to use Word or Power Point “shapes” to create a classroom.

NOTE: The university instructor may choose to define the size of the classroom, the number of students, the number of computers, where classroom electrical plugs are located, and any other factors to make the activity more realistic. Encourage creativity and adding components of reading centers, carpet areas, science centers or lab tables, plants, pet areas and other ideas

3. Share classroom designs with other groups for critique and suggestions.

4. Review and discuss suggestions from the other groups.

5. Design a dream classroom that would meet the needs of the students and the teacher.

6. The evaluation of this activity could include a rubric based on the keys of good classroom arrangement.

7. Include the classroom design in the classroom management notebook.
