Course Description: Motivation is a multifaceted psychological construct that encompasses underlying processes that initiate, direct and maintain human behavior. The aim of this course is to introduce the history, theories, and principles of human motivation and emotions. We will examine motivation from a variety of perspectives including physiological, psychological, and social perspectives.

Textbook Reeve, J. (2005). Understanding Motivation and Emotion. 4th Ed. Wiley. You will be required to read additional materials, information will be provided in class.

Format The nature of this class will be primarily conveyed through the text, lectures, class exercises, and video presentations. Occasionally, we will go over case studies discussing how different motivational theories may apply to a given situation. I expect you will read the text and familiarize yourself with the material before coming to class so we can talk intelligently about the topic. I strongly encourage you to contribute your opinions, comments, questions, and personal experiences. You can download handouts of the lecture here:

Course Objectives After completing this course the students should:

1) Be familiar with the major topics and issues in motivation. 2) Have an understanding of the basic motivation theories and principles, their pros and cons. 3) Have the ability to think critically about motivation and its application to personal

experiences and the "real world."

Policies 1) I reserve the right to change the schedule as required, although I will announce any schedule changes in class. 2) Attendance is optional! However, if you miss a (many) question(s) on the quiz that was (were) not in the textbook, there is a 100% chance it was covered in class. 3) After the exam, you may come by my office ? during my office hours (or meet Thu - my TA) to review the exam. I do NOT allow students to take the exam home. 4) If you have a documented disability and require special accommodations, please contact me before the exam and I will be happy to make arrangements for you. 5) Students are expected to maintain high personal ethical standards in this course. Any evidence of cheating on exams or the paper, helping other students to cheat, or plagiarism, will lead to serious academic consequences, such as failure of the course. 6) Finally, if you are struggling with the material please come see me or my TA. We are available to help you, but it is your responsibility to let us know that you would like to spend some extra time outside of class going over the material. We want you to learn in this class and hopefully enjoy the process!

*I am constantly experimenting with this class to make it as meaningful a learning experience as I can. As a result, sometimes things don't go as smoothly as I would like. If you'll bear with me, I try to be flexible in the face of the unforeseen. I hope you'll enjoy taking this course as much as I enjoy teaching it. Please come and see me if you're having concerns or problems that you want to talk over.

Evaluation: You have the option of choosing from three grading formats. You are to decide the option you would like to be evaluated on by the last day of the second week of class (January 16). All three options have the Motivational Analysis Paper. The main difference lies in your preference to being tested on multiple choice questions (Option 1), reflect on the chapters/lectures (Option 2) or write essay exam questions (Option 3)!

Course Requirement: Multiple Choice Quizzes ? Option 1 There will be three quizzes which will consist of multiple-choice questions and will be based on lecture material, the textbook, and any additional reading assignments or insights learned through class discussions. Although attendance does not make up any formal part of your final grade in this class, everything that is covered in class is fair game for the quizzes (Bring your own scantrons you will need total of 3)

If you know in advance that you cannot make a quiz, please see me ASAP so we can schedule an alternate time. There will be NO make-up exams except for serious, documented reasons. Incomplete grades are not given except for serious, unavoidable, documentable reasons, as described in the most current PSU Bulletin.

2

Reflection Papers ? Option 2 These are to reflect the depth of your understanding of the topics covered in this chapter. I will provide specific questions for this paper for you to answer. The assignments will be provided on the course web-site (). In general, I am looking for:

? How well you define concepts, theories, and various issues covered in class, and ? YOUR evaluations and applications of the material to your personal life. In terms of late submissions, if your first paper is late there will be no points deducted. For the second late submission, 25% of the points will be deducted. For third late paper, 50% will be deducted. For fourth late paper, 75% will be deducted. After that, no reflection papers will be accepted.

Cumulative Essay Final ? Option 3 The essay exam will be a comprehensive test covering all aspects of motivation theories and principles covered this quarter. All chapters and additional readings covered in class are fair game. This option is best for you (a) if you prefer to write out answers rather than take multiple choice quizzes, (b) if you know you will don't like to reflect and provide your opinions on textbook chapters and/or (c) you just want to take one final exam and be done with. Be prepared: both of the major components are due in 2 consecutive weeks. So the last 2 weeks of the term will be the most difficult for you if you do not keep up with your review of the material and making progress on the Motivational Analysis paper throughout the term.

Motivational Analysis Paper ? All Options An important part of this course is understanding how you will use the material learned in this class in the future. This paper is an application of at least two theories of motivation to a real world issue. You will do this by incorporating information you read in the textbook, learn through class discussions, and research in the library to explain a phenomenon that interests you. Detailed instructions and a scoring rubric can be found on the course web site under the link titled "Motivational Analysis Paper". Please note that the final due date is Monday, March 9th in class. I will NOT accept late papers! If you will not be in class on Monday the 9th, it is your responsibility to make other arrangements to get your paper to me in class or prior to Monday. A letter grade will be deducted for each day a paper is late. Please do NOT email me your paper.

Extra Credit ? All Options The additional extra credit assignment requires you to review an EMPIRICAL (peer reviewed) motivational study published within the last 3 years (2006-2008). The review has to be a two-page paper discussing the motivational theory used and the results found. Discuss the main findings of the article along with how the motivational theory was used in the study. The main aim of this extra credit is for you to to understand how theories can be used in understanding behavior and keep up-to-date on the current research on motivation.

* Your goal is to demonstrate that you understand the study. Avoid excessive use of direct quotes and summarize the articles in your own words. Evaluation will be based on whether you answer the following questions.

1. What was the purpose of the study? 2. What research methods & subjects did the authors use? 3. What did the authors find? How are the results relevant to this class? 4. What criticisms do you have of the quality or practical value of the research? 5. How relevant are the results of these studies to the "real world" of managing

people in organizations? Be sure to defend your assessment. This extra credit will raise your final grade by 2%. March 11th is the last day to turn in your extra credit assignments. I will not accept any late extra credit assignments. Early birds are always welcome!

Enrichment Points ? All Options 3-5 minute in-class presentation on any topic which was unanswered in class by me. This will raise your final grade by .5% (half a percent point). You can do up to 2 presentations (on different topics) for a total of 1% increase.
