Course Description:

This course will focus on the basic ideas of Statistics. Students learn to organize, display, and analyze data and to explore the elements of probability. This course is an effective preparation for students interested in the fields of social sciences, health sciences, business, engineering, and mathematics. The course is enriched through the use of real-world problems. All students should have a mastery of Algebra and basic Geometric concepts. This is an Honors level course and will be conducted as such.

Primary Textbook:

The Practice of Statistics, 4th edition by Starnes Yates Moore

Weekly Grade Sheet

Periodically (weekly when school schedule permits) I expect a parent-signed grade sheet submitted as homework. Students are to print out a copy of their current grades in my class and turn them in SIGNED by their parents. Failure to turn in the grade sheet, or have it signed will result in a grade of “Z” for that assignment. The purpose of this procedure is to ensure that students and parents are aware and diligently on top of student progress in my class. These grade sheets will be stored in student folders. I will also accept parent emails, not student emails as proof that a parent is aware of current grade progress in my class.

Class Work

o Students must bring ALL necessary materials to class daily. Sharing of materials is highly discouraged and forbidden during assessments.

o I do not replace lost formula sheets, but I do allow pre-approved copies.

o Class work is a frequent, daily, occurrence. Students are expected to be able, willing, and ready to work.

Homework

o Homework is assigned and is due by next class, unless otherwise specified.

o I will always assign Homework on my whiteboard, and I will verbally announce the assignment.

o Most homework assignments are graded on completion; however, all work must be shown, and all instructions must be followed to receive full credit. There are no exceptions. In general, showing only answers will not be accepted as a valid homework completion.

o Homework completion is of the utmost importance to succeed in this course. Late assignments will not be graded, unless it is excused make-up work. Homework and classwork are not the most weighted items in this course and should not be relied on to pass this course; however, it is crucial to do the assignments to be better prepared for the assessments that are heavily weighted.

o All work must be legible, and must be clearly marked with the student’s name, date, period, and assignment title. Papers lacking a name will not receive credit.

Tests and Quizzes

o Tests and Quizzes must be completed following all instructions to receive full credit. All work must be shown, including complete sentences when required.

o Any student absent on a test day must have an excused absence or will automatically receive a zero for that test’s grade.

o Make-up tests will be administered upon the student’s return to class, either during class or before or after school, depending on the situation. It is the student’s responsibility to request any test or make-up work upon re-joining the class.

o The use of a cell phone, an MP3 player, or any other personal electronic device with a calculator application during a test will result in the automatic invalidation of the test, and an automatic grade of zero.

o I will not provide materials during any test; students need to bring formula sheets and calculators. All students are responsible to bring their own materials. Sharing of materials during a test will be penalized, or earn an automatic invalidation of test, at my discretion, and depending on severity and frequency of infraction.

Assessment:

Though this is not an Advanced Placement (AP) course, the material covered in due time will be the same (within reason) to an AP course. Students may take a few practice AP exams throughout the year as benchmark assessments only for the purpose of showing gains and learning as the year progresses.

Extra Credit:

Extra credit is rare, and will not be assigned on an individual basis. If/when I choose to assign extra credit, it must be fully completed to be eligible for grading. Incomplete assignments will not be graded.

Academic Dishonesty:

DORAL ACADEMY PREP ACADEMIC INTEGRITY POLICY

All Doral Academy Charter students are expected to be honest in the way they carry out, present and submit their work. This means that all parts of all works submitted for assessments, whether internal or external, must either be original to the student or must be properly cited.

Academic Dishonesty

Academic dishonesty/malpractice may involve:

• Copying materials from a textbook, the internet, or another student and presenting it as one’s own work.

• Collusion.

• Taking unauthorized materials into an examination room (e.g. electronic devices other than a permitted calculator, notes, smartphones, etc.) regardless of whether this material is used or potentially contains information pertinent to the examination.

• Misconduct during an examination, including any attempt to disrupt the examination or distract another student.

• Exchanging or in any way supporting, or attempting to support, the passing of information that is related to an examination.

• Failing to comply with the instructions of the teacher/proctor or other members of the school’s staff responsible for the conduct of the examination.

• Impersonating another student.

• Stealing/copying examination papers.

• Using an unauthorized calculator during an examination.

• Disclosing or discussing the content of an examination paper with a person outside of the immediate school community within 24 hours of the end of the examination.

**The list above is by no means exhaustive.

Distinction between legitimate collaboration and unacceptable collusion or plagiarism

There are occasions when group work is entirely desirable and acceptable. This is legitimate collaboration. In such a case, each student involved should play a distinct part so that it is clearly seen how their contribution differs from that of others in the group. Any written work presented must be individual. One student cannot do the writing for another.

Unacceptable collusion occurs when one student copies from another with their agreement, or when one student does the work for another.

Actions to be taken by the school if a student is found guilty of malpractice

The emphasis of Doral Academy’s academic honesty policy is on prevention, and on students learning the appropriate skills of correctly referencing work. We are aware that students come from a variety of cultural backgrounds, and it may take them time to understand this policy. This is not to say that plagiarism is tolerated. Repeated offences will mean that more severe action will be implemented. Student’s found guilty of malpractice in general will be subject to consequences at the discretion of the school administration which can include:

• Meeting with student’s counselor and school administrator about the incident. Parents notified

• Zero earned for the assignment

• Saturday school detention

• Outdoor suspension

• Student placed on academic probation for the school year

How are students educated about academic honesty and integrity?

▪ Parents will be required to read and sign Academic Honesty and Integrity agreement.

▪ Policy will be explained by teacher and may be included in teacher’s syllabi.

▪ Policy will be located in both Parent and Student contract.

▪ Policy will be detailed in school’s morning announcements

Students are expected to be honest and ethical in all their academic work.  Academic dishonesty is defined as an intentional act of deception in one of the following areas:

o Cheating – use or attempted use of unauthorized materials, information or study aids

o Fabrication – falsification or invention of any information

o Assisting -  helping another commit an act of academic dishonesty

o Tampering – altering or interfering with evaluation instruments and documents

o Plagiarism – representing the words or ideas of another person as one’s own.

Complete or partial academic dishonesty will immediately result in a grade of zero.

Absences

o Due to our block schedule, an absence to a class is equivalent to two absences.

o An absent student is responsible to obtain the information/topic covered during their absence.

o An absent student will be held responsible for obtaining all make-up work. Being absent from class may hinder a student’s academic progress. If possible, don’t miss class at all.

o Students missing class for extracurricular activities are not exempt from assigned work deadlines. An absent student participating on an extracurricular activity is responsible for any assigned material, and must request make-up work/test upon returning to class.

o As stated in the Parent Handbook: “Teachers are required to provide students with make-up assignments once the absence has been excused; however, it is the responsibility of the student to request the assignments from the teacher(s).”

o It is the student’s responsibility to inform the teacher when the excuse for an absence has been turned in.

o If a student accrues too many absences and/or tardies in a class, the student may receive a grade of “No Credit” for the course, regardless of the letter grade earned.

o Parents, if the attendance policy is completely understood, please write “I understand” in the “Parent Response” section of the signature page. Failure to respond does not excuse the student from the school’s policies.

Tardies:

In an effort to maintain to a minimum the disruptions to class time because of tardy students the administration has set the following rules:

o Students tardy to their first, second, or third periods, or caught on a Tardy Hall Sweep during the day, will not be allowed into the classroom, will receive an unexcused absence for that period, and will not be allowed to make up the day’s work.

o Students tardy to a class without a MDCPS official hall pass may receive a detention, at the teacher’s discretion.

o Students may be assigned to detention for every tardy after the second unexcused tardy. A student may be referred to Administration after the third tardy.

o In the event that a student is tardy to a class without a MDCPS official hall pass on a test day, the student will not be given extra time to complete the test.

o Lock out: In the event of a student being locked out on the day of an exam (quiz or test), the student will receive a “Z” for the exam and cannot make it up. Please do NOT be late to class.

Classroom Rules, Procedures and Expectations:

1. Come to class prepared with all necessary materials, and assigned homework to hand in upon entering the classroom.

2. Be seated and ready to work when the second bell rings.

3. Comply with instructions and/or orders the first time you are told.

4. Be respectful and courteous towards all your teachers, all your peers, and all school personnel. This includes respect towards the school’s and peers’ property.

5. Participate in class discussions and activities in a constructive and positive manner.

6. Profanity, in any language, will not be tolerated.

7. Personal electronics will be confiscated on sight and sent to the office. No exceptions.

Behavioral Consequences (not necessarily in this order):

1. Verbal Warning

2. Confiscation of item(s)

3. Conference with teacher

4. Phone call/letter home

5. Detention/Saturday School

6. Parent, teacher, and student conference

7. Referral to Principal

Required Materials:

1. This is a senior/junior level course. I expect that at this point students understand how to be organized and studious. I expect a binder for this course with a section for warm-up questions, returned assignments (to study from), and class notes. If I notice a general lack of organizational skills among my students, I may choose to collect binders at random to do notebook checks to reinforce the need.

2. Graph paper (is REALLY helpful during specific chapters!)

3. Graphing calculators are required for this course. I highly encourage students to read the instruction manual for their respective graphing calculators. I will do my best to help with the different models. I am better with the Texas Instruments line of calculators. I recommend the TI-84 CE Color Graphing Calculator, but the TI nspire series is also very useful.

(IMPORTANT: Cell phones or any other personal electronic devices are NOT acceptable calculators. These items will be confiscated on sight. The use of any of these items during a test will result in the automatic invalidation of the test.)

Note to parents:

It is my goal that all my students are successful in their math course. I will assist all students in any way I can. However, I alone cannot ensure your child’s success. It is of utmost importance that your child attends school, completes homework daily, and turns in all assigned work on a timely manner.

I urge you to emphasize to them that, ultimately, the responsibility for their learning befalls upon them. The combination of all these aspects will determine your child’s success. Your cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated.
