Consequently, the album has a few strong themes: Evangelisation, Jesus, Eucharist and Praise. The songs vary quite widely in style but most of them will be suitable for both parish and school use. Hearts On Fire was originally commissioned as the theme song for Brisbane Archdiocese’s 1999 National Evangelisation Conference of the same name. It was composed as a stirring Gathering or Sending song for any celebration and is already widely used in sacramental liturgies throughout the country. Please note the alternative Verse 1 and extra “eucharistic” verse on page 7. This song could be used as both Gathering and Sending song at a celebration using different verses for each. Stand Up! is another stirring Gathering song designed to begin a celebration with a bang! The verses attempt to be as inclusive as possible but don’t be afraid to include groups of your own choice. The “doo-doohs” on the recording are there for fun and may or may not suit your school or parish. Keep the tempo moving in this piece!Continued requests from teachers for a suitable graduation song was the inspiration for Moving On, Reaching Out. It has a “pop ballad” feel and tries to focus on the new beginnings as well as the endings in these happy/sad Rite of Passage liturgies. It also has a clear religious focus which is missing from the pop songs so often used at these occasions. This piece lends itself to some interpretive choreography. Good luck!Cosmic Hymn of Praise, based on Psalm 148, is a joyful shout of praise to God’s creative goodness. It can be used as a Responsorial Psalm/Gospel Acclamation, or as a piece for any Creation/Environment theme. The key changes between the verses are not imperative but certainly add to the build-up of the piece. The song is set for Cantor/Assembly but can be sung throughout in unison.Make a Little Difference echoes the strong evangelisation/mission theme of this album. It makes the point that evangelisation is not necessarily about door-knocking or preaching on street corners. It is also about doing the little, everyday things well - especially when we interact with other people. Another evangelisation song, Holy Spirit of Fire, is a powerful reflective piece reinforcing the “Fire” image of the Holy Spirit. Clearly useful for sacramental liturgies, especially Confirmation, this piece is also a great inspirational prayer for strength on the journey.Based on John 18:12, Jesus Is The Light is a fun rock style piece sure to brighten your school or parish liturgies! If your rock band is not available (and who has one anyway?) use hand percussion, especially tambourines and tambours, to add to guitar and keyboard accompaniment. The vocal echoes in the chorus on the recording, are easy to do and add to the contemporary style of the song.St Teresa’s Prayer, based on the beautiful prayer of St Teresa of Avila, is probably the most powerful personal call to evangelisation in this collection - we are Christ in the world today. This simple song can be used whenever our mission in the world is central - and when isn’t it?I Am The Way from John 14, is a country hoedown featuring banjo and country lead guitar on the recording. It focusses on Jesus as the way to God and is suitable as a Gathering or Sending song. Yee-ha!Jesus Our Saviour is a song for times of sadness, desperation and despair. Musically very simple, it has an uplifting chorus of hope in times of trouble. Use it for Reconciliationand times of loss, bereavement or tragedy in your community.I am always searching for suitable Communion songs for use in my own parish and school. Here are three, each of a completely different style.Who says Communion songs have to be quiet, gentle and slow? Given For You based on Matthew 26:26-29 certainly isn’t! It is a bright, up-tempo, Latin style song which children in particular just seem to sing straight through as if they’ve known it all their lives. Use guiros, maracas and rhythm sticks to capture the mood.Ideally, one single song should be sung to give unity to the Communion procession. The Bread Of Life is a gentle reflective piece based on John 6, which, if sung in its entirety (6 verses) lasts for over seven minutes. The chorus is very easy for the Assembly to sing, with the verses probably more suited to cantor or choir. This song has become a favourite with adults and children in my parish. One Body, One People with its anthem-like chorus is a great Gathering or Communion song. It stresses that we are a living part of the flowing stream - past, present and future - and that we are all in this together! The Love Song, from 1 Corinthians 13, has spoken verses and a contemporary chorus sure to appeal to all ages. It can be used at any celebrations where pure love is a focus and is obviously tailor-made for weddings. The key change in the last chorus is not essential but certainly adds to a big finish. The spoken verses must be delivered with passion and sensitivity to convey the rich meaning of this powerful piece of scripture.Song of Blessing, based on Numbers 6, may be sung at any celebration, but especially at times of commissioning or farewell. It is set for Cantor (Verse 1) and Assembly (Verse 2) however Verse 1 may be sung twice when the Assembly is commissioning or farewelling an individual or small group. ................
