Wellness Community on West Application

Wellness Community on West Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How is the Wellness Community different from the Substance-Free Living option?

A: In addition to committing to live a substance-free lifestyle, members of the Wellness Community have the privilege of participating in a variety of social and educational activities that are available throughout the semester. Our programming efforts target a range of wellness-related topics: positive social relationships, emotional competence, personal growth, and a healthy physical environment in addition to the importance of balanced nutrition and exercise. Activities are also organized to help members achieve a personal wellness-related goal. Members of the Wellness Community benefit from leadership opportunities such as serving on the Wellness Council and service to the community.

Q: How large is the Wellness Community?

A: There are approximately 45 members living in 5 singles (preference to medical needs and rising seniors) and 21-24 doubles. Wellness is housed in House 2 of Wannamaker and there is one RA for the house.

Q: Are there any special dues associated with membership in Wellness?

A: No.

Q: Do current members of the Wellness Community need to reapply?

A: Yes. Some elements of the community are subject to small changes from year to year in order to keep up with students' interests/needs and the application process reflects those changes. Current members in good standing are given slight priority over new applicants.

Q: Does my preferred roommate need to apply?

A: Yes.

Q: When will I know the status of my application?

A: Initial offers and waitlist notices are sent the week following the application deadline. Subsequent offers are extended every 2-4 days until the community is filled.

Q: If I am accepted to Wellness, is my roommate automatically accepted, too?

A: No, all applications are considered on their own merit. In addition, there is no blocking in the Wellness Community. Once offers are made, you will have an opportunity to preference a roommate from the group of other new members. If you do not currently have a preferred roommate, there is a roommate-matching process to help you find a good match before Wellness room picks.

Q: What if my roommate or I is waitlisted?

A: After initial offers are made, there are typically several additional rounds of offers made to allow applicants off the waitlist. There is no specific order on the waitlist because offers need to match the gender/classification demands of the residential space available in the community.

Q: Can the residential space accommodate my need for air conditioning or a medical single?

A: Yes, Wannamaker is air-conditioned and therefore window units are not needed. Medical singles can be accommodated as long as the need is appropriately documented with Student Health and communicated to Housing Assignments.

Q: What are the requirements for remaining in the Wellness on West Community?

A:

• Attend a one-day retreat with the entire group held at the start of the fall semester.

• Create a Wellness goal for the year

• Each semester, attend 2 dinners provided by the Residence Coordinator Leah Campbell

• Attend the “Open Reflection” at the end of each semester. This event allows you to showcase your wellness goals in various ways

• Each semester, attend 2 Wellness activities. After the activity is completed, students are asked to submit a reflection on their experience covering what they learned and how this will apply to their overall wellness goal.

o These requirements are subject to change before the start of the Fall semester.

Q: What is considered a Wellness related activity?

A: These can range from attending a program, a CAPS workshop, or integrating a wellness practice into your everyday lifestyle. Please note that you can always ask if something contributes to the wellness activities. Let your creativity flow while discovering how to achieve overall well-being!
