First and foremost, I want to take this opportunity to thank the members of NWCA for electing me to serve as your National President for the coming year, and I will serve our organization to the absolute best of my ability. My theme this year is “Opportunity to Excel” and I will offer my insight of this theme in the coming months. For those who know me well, this phrase has been in my vocabulary for years. You know you have really made a difference when your boss uses your mantra during a staff meeting!!

The members of MenRiv Park #240 did a wonderful job hosting this year’s National Convention at Short Stay, in Moncks Corner SC. They always make it look so easy! Thank you again ladies for a great week.

NWCA Kitsap #46 in Bremerton, WA will host the 2014 National Convention.

Our National Project for 2013-2014 is Operation Shoebox. This organization is based near The Villages, Florida, and is committed to sending

care packages to our service members overseas on a weekly basis. Nancy Perry, PNP and Claire Stacy, PNP are serving as our contacts for this project, and have already been to the facility to volunteer their time. Bravo ladies! At their request, we will be sending collected monetary donations to Operation Shoebox on a quarterly basis, so if you wish to donate to our National Project you may do so throughout the year. Nancy and Claire will be updating us on this project periodically in the Connection.

There was discussion during convention about the Navy Recruiter of the Year award, and the question was asked if there was anything like this in the Marine Corps. Well, our own Marty Boehm, President of NWCA Backbone of the Devil Dogs #315 and a Marine Corps wife, took the challenge and discovered that the USMC did indeed have such an award presented annually. I asked the Regional Presidents to include the information on this award in their monthly letter to their clubs. In a nutshell, their sponsorship was greatly diminished due to governmental budget cuts, and they can use our help in honoring these recruiters and their spouses. These awards are presented in January, and so our “Opportunity to Excel” by donating to this project is coming upon us very quickly. Two clubs have already made donations for this, and I hope that between now and the end of December other clubs can help to honor these service members. If you would like to make a donation, please send to Crystal Wilkerson, National Treasurer, and note on the check that it is for the USMC Recruiter of the Year. We also checked to see if the Coast Guard had this type of recognition for their recruiters, and they do not.

It is with great sadness that we announce that Janet Wylie, PNP lost her brave battle with cancer a few days after the end of National Convention. She will be greatly missed by all of us. We send our love and prayers to her family.

National President’s Acceptance Speech

National Convention, Moncks Corner, SC

What a wonderful convention week this has been, accomplishing our business goals, reconnecting with old friends and making new friends.

I want to thank our hosts, the members of MenRiv Park #240, for their superb work. We are once again reminded of their southern hospitality and why we love coming to the Low Country. Those who have hosted conventions know the hard work that goes into the planning and executing such an endeavor, and you, dear sister members, made it look effortless.

As I humbly stand before you this evening, I am reminded that my journey has come full circle. I joined NWCA in 1976, and shortly thereafter, my family was transferred to Charleston. It was during my time with MenRiv Park #240 that I learned what NWCA was really all about, and I knew that I had made the right choice in joining. My sister members always encouraged me to take on new challenges, even when I wasn’t really sure I was ready for them. Now, fully aware of the task ahead, I find myself surrounded by the same sister members whose love, support and patient encouragement have brought me back to the place where it all began. And I cannot thank you enough.

While we strive to grow our membership, it is equally important to retain the members we have. We must continue to encourage and inspire every member to reach their fullest potential. We have a great deal of untapped talent and energy within our organization. With proper encouragement and guidance that talent will help your club locally, and our entire organization nationally become even better. It is up to our “seasoned” members and leaders at all levels to nurture and encourage such opportunities, whether your club has only three members or thirty. In the process, we will renew the enthusiasm in NWCA, which will in turn help us grow.

With that in mind, the 2013-2014 President’s theme is an Opportunity To Excel.

As you leave this evening and prepare to return to your own clubs and lives, please take with you these positive affirmations that relate to optimism:

There are no problems, just challenges, because challenges motivate you to action.

There are no mistakes, just opportunities to learn, for with these learning experiences there is Opportunity to Excel.

2013 WINNING THEME

2013 National President's Theme

Be The Change

The Castaways Thrift is operated by the members of Navy Wives Clubs of America, MenRiv Park #240. There are about twenty members in this club, but not all work the shop. Those that do are Darlene Cousins, Pauline Schaeffer, Penney Carucci, Fawn Hersman, Jan Hill, Denise McCready, Christine Taylor, Hazel Cole; and you will also see Linda Hedden and Cris Icenhower. These ladies have grown to know so many of their customers. They love when the children come see them, offering handshakes, warm smiles and from time to time, a hug. On Thursday, January 17th a little boy named Everett came in with his Mom and Auntie to shop before returning to Wisconsin. Everett found a friend in our member, Denise McCready. With each new toy or trinket he discovered, he would take her by the hand to show or get her to bring the treasure to his level. After examining the collection of toys and stuffed animals, he found an Elmo sand toy and Hot Wheels car he wanted more than anything. As his Mom and Auntie were checking out, they shared with us (Everett's) Dad had died very unexpectedly and in town on short notice. During check out, Everett walked behind the counter to show Denise one more time a bear that he hugged so tightly. His Mom, who was ready to leave,

asked him to put the bear down because she was already buying him a few things. Following mom's direction, he sadly put the teddy bear down and returned to his mom and aunt. By the look on his adorable face, we could tell that he was sad to leave without the bear, too. Just before walking out the door, Denise and Fawn picked up the bear and presented it to Everett and wished him a safe trip home to Wisconsin. As the Shop is opened Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, each worker could share a similar story. Not only did Everett feel good, so did Denise and Fawn.

As workers, our goal is to make money, which can then be distributed back to our community in many fashions. Just to name a few ways our club assists is to buy groceries for families in need; donate supplies to area schools; to assist our base in various ways and so much more. Each NWCA Thrift Shop has guidelines to follow, but also has the liberty to negotiate the price on items for sale. On that January day, little Everett was our customer to please. The price of the bear was very little change, but worth comfort and security for a little boy with so much yet to be discovered. Not knowing what he was about to encounter from the loss of his Dad, a teddy bear surely was not going to be forgotten. No dollar amount or pocket change could measure the happiness felt by all when our little shopper left with his new, found friend. And for that reason, we, the members of

MenRiv Park #240 work the shop so to enable our club to "Be The Change" for a good number of people in both the military as well as the civilian community.

I am thrilled to have been re-elected for a second term as your National Secretary. I admit that preparing for convention and during it was a little scary. Okay, a lot scary! But now that I have one year under my belt and know more about the position, I am looking forward to the upcoming year. I really want to thank PNP, Melissa Worthy, as well as Kathy Cayton and Kathy Moore for mentoring me with love! Convention was wonderful and although we accomplished a lot of business, being in the Low Country was very relaxing! My thanks to the Hostess Club for a job well done.

I am very excited to have an improved Operating Manual and brand new handbooks for Secretaries and Treasurers. These tools will be very helpful to you, but they have to be read!

Congratulations to our new National Board of Officers and Chairmen! It was a wonderful convention and Men Riv Park #240 showed what gracious hostesses our southern sisters are! I would also like to thank all of those who were so supportive to me personally at convention. I learned a lot and appreciate their mentorship.

We were so blessed with the generosity of our sisters who made over $10,000 in contributions to our various scholarships and projects. Since there were so many please let me know, if I miss anyone.

I’m honored to continue to serve as your Member-at-Large Coordinator for 2013-2014.

Thanks to all who helped make our NWCA National Convention successful. Special thanks go out to MenRiv Park #240 for giving our National Convention members a great time.

Congratulations to our new National Board members lead by National President Julie Sharp.

As promised, the winners of our MAL Short Story Contest were announced at National Convention. Congratulations to our winner: Eileen Ligay, Eastern Region MAL, who submitted a story entitled “Friendship In NWCA.” Also Congratulations to our First Runner-Up Winner, Darlene Carpenter, Central Region MAL, who submitted a short story entitled: “Our First Big Motorcycle Adventure.” Both of these stories were wonderful and speak about both friendship and fun NWCA Members cherish so very much. Both of these stories will be included in my November MAL Newsletter.

Thanks to each MAL for remaining a part of our Great Organization. Always Remember, MAL’s are an important part of NWCA - we need to find

ways to continue to participate, communicate and share NWCA information that will allow our Organization to “Excel.”

Now lets all support our National President's theme for 2013-2014:

“Opportunity To Excel.”

MAL’s you are not forgotten, because -

The holidays are here; this is a perfect time to spread some cheer and find a potential member. Is your club hosting a holiday party? Are you taking a hot cooked meal to a local shelter or Fisher House? This would be a great way to introduce Navy Wives Clubs of America, Inc. Carry business cards with your club’s information and perhaps the link to your Facebook page to generate some curiosity about your club’s activities, location of your meetings and/or how your community benefits from our organization. They do say a picture is worth a thousand words. What are your pictures saying?

I would like to begin, and say “Thank You” for the Opportunity to Excel for another year as your merchandise chairman.

I believe National Convention was a success for merchandise. Our new items, the umbrella and the two-tone tone are already out of stock. Thank you for your purchases!

I will continue to look for lapel pins, and affordable items for your viewing pleasure. An item discussed at convention was a can koozie. Possibly that will be available soon. If you are interested in the new Bylaws and Standing Rules, I have these for sale at $5.00. Please, give me a call or send me an e-mail regarding what you would like to see. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Wishing everyone safe & happy holidays!

I was recently asked “Should you place your hand over your heart during the National Anthem?”. A lot of people do, but is it correct to do so?

According to United States Code, 36 USC 301, military in uniform should salute, military & veterans not in uniform may salute, and all others should place their right hand over their heart. If the flag is displayed, face the flag, when the flag is not displayed face toward the music. Showing respect for our country is great, and even better when done properly.

Thank you for the Opportunity to Excel serving NWCA as Archivist for this next year. I am following in some serious footsteps.

I have often thought mayhem and chaos happen when we are least prepared; especially where important records are concerned. With that in mind, I ask you, what is your club doing to protect its important records? Do you have a recovery plan or back up of important documents like financial records, dues reports, minutes and bylaws? What about club history? Have you scanned your annual club history books to have a pictorial record of your club’s many accomplishments, members and memories before gifting the book to an outgoing club president or putting it in storage? For those who don’t do history books, have you scanned your certificates of participation and awards? What about important letters sent and received (e.g. nominations, military leaders, appointments and resignations, and sponsorship)? These are some of the things your national archivist does for NWCA, Inc. and your local club can too. There are many electronic media storage options that are within your club’s available price range potentially: external and portable hard drives; thumb or flash drives; CDs or DVDs and internet storage.

NWCA NATIONAL WELFARE PROJECT

As most of you know we voted to make Operation ShoeBox for the Troops as our project for the year. This is located in The Villages FL where Claire Stacy, Kathy Moore and I live. We are pleased and excited to be able to help this great project. This started in 2003 as an effort to support troops deployed outside of the USA. They are receiving more media attention each day. In fact, on Veteran's Day we expect to pack our 1,000,000th package and we will have Fox News covering the process several times during the day. More media attention means more donations. There are no paid positions, since this is an all-volunteer organization. Everything that is done requires donations. The postage alone exceeds $20,000 a month.

Please support your NWCA Welfare Project "Operation ShoeBox for the Troops" by sending a donation today to:

NWCA National Treasurer, Crystal Wilkerson

5210 109th Place

Marysville WA 98271

We also need wrapped candy, trail mix, peanut butter and cheese crackers, beef jerky powdered drink mix, oatmeal, hot chocolate ramen noodles, etc. Also needed are toiletries, games, CDs, writing paper and envelopes, just to name a few.

If you live near, or plan to come to our Eastern Convention, load up your car!!!
