Those members are the Head of Department, Undergraduate Director, and two senior faculty. The Assessment Committee will meet 3 times per academic year. The Undergraduate Director of Africana Studies will assume the chair position of the Assessment Committee and the Department Head will serve as co-chair. The Assessment committee is responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating the department’s assessment plan to provide necessary feedback which ensures the effective implementation of the department’s program outcomes. A key aspect of this charge is designing the various assessment tools and attended rubrics with input from the faculty. The Assessment Committee will keep faculty informed of assessment activities, collect assessment materials, review assessment data, identify and address short-comings in the department assessment plan. It should be noted that given the anticipated large volume of work associated with the assessment process, faculty on the Assessment Committee should be recognized for their substantial department service contribution. Assessment Schedule During the beginning of the Fall and Spring Semester (within first week of classes), the chair of the Assessment Committee will notify and remind all relevant instructors of targeted courses to submit required assessment data at the conclusion of the semester. At the end of the respective semester, the chair of the Assessment Committee will collect and file the relevant assessment data. The Assessment Committee will meet three times per academic year to carry-out its charge. The first meeting will occur within the first month of the Spring semester in which the members of the Assessment Committee will summarize and analyze the assessment data. The second meeting will occur in May at the conclusion of the Spring semester in which the members of the Assessment Committee will summarize, analyze and interpret the assessment data to ascertain the degree to which Program Learning Outcomes are actualized. The third and final meeting of the Assessment Committee will occur in August during the Department’s annual faculty retreat in which an annual report of its findings and recommendations will be presented to the faculty. Due to the small number of Africana Studies majors, significant changes to the assessment plan will be implemented after data are collected from at least three cohorts of targeted courses. Hence, significant recommendations will be implemented every 4 years. Secondly, the lack of faculty expertise, due to the inability to replace key faculty members, the department has not been able to offer AFST 3040 Research Methods in African Studies—one of the targeted assessment courses. Students have fulfilled this requirement by enrolling in the Sociology research methods class. ................
