Station Outreach Initiatives
Internship Program:
WNEP has an internship program with area Universities and Colleges. Journalism/communication class students intern in the news, programming and production departments to acquire hands-on media skills. Students work the number of hours required for credit by the school…usually 15 hours per credit hour. Other departments also participate in the internship program.

Employee Training:
WNEP had five employees graduate from a management development program during 2004 and continuing through September 2005. The “LEAP” (Leadership, Excellence, Achievement, Purpose) Program is a management-training program designed to recruit and develop employees. The program provides participants with an overview of management practices, including the performance management system, specialized training in various areas, and other aspects of people management.
Job Fairs:
WNEP Pennsylvania Outdoor Life host participated in a Mass Media Symposium on April 15 & 16 at Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre.
WNEP anchors participated as panelists at the Penn State University Career Week at University Park on April 16, 2004. He collected resumes.
More than a dozen employees participated in the “Live, Work & Play in NEPA” job fair held on April 27, 2004, at the Wachovia Arena in Wilkes-Barre. Resumes were collected and many business cards were distributed for future contact regarding our opportunities and internships. In addition, eight live, cut-ins aired throughout the day. The event ran from 10am to 7pm. An estimated 7,000 attended.

March 27, 2004; Two employees judged the photography portion of the General Federated Women’s Club Arts & Craft Contest on the District Level. The event was held at the Hilton Hotel in Scranton.
March 27, 2004; Several WNEP employees participated in the “For Kids Sake” bowling tournament in Luzerne County. The proceeds benefit Big Brothers/Big Sisters.
March 31, 2004; Several WNEP personnel attended the “Dress for Success” luncheon at the Radisson Lackawanna Station Hotel. WNEP is a sponsor of the program. One of our anchors was the key speaker at the event.
April 2004; Anchor participated as a panelist during Career Week at Penn State Wilkes-Barre.
April 1, 2004; Anchor read at Mehoopany Elementary School for a Dr. Suess Reading Day in Wyoming County.
April 2, 2004; WNEP anchor was a representative for a Youth & Government Forum at Keystone College, Lackawanna County.
April 8, 2004; WNEP Pennsylvania Outdoor Life host read to a class at the Wyoming Valley West School.
April 9, 2004; WNEP Pennsylvania Outdoor Life host read to a class at the Dallas Elementary School.
April 9, 2004; Reporter spoke to the Young at Heart at Jackson Baptist Church in Scranton.
April 14, 2004; Meteorologist spoke to the “Hit the Rise Club” in Northumberland County.
April 14, 2004; WNEP Pennsylvania Outdoor Life host was the speaker at the Pennsylvania Environmental Council in Wilkes-Barre.
April 15, 2004; Meteorologist visited the Pittston Senior Center.
April 15, 2004; WNEP anchor sand the National Anthem for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Red Barons Baseball Home Opener game in Lackawanna County. The game was televised live on WNEP-TV.
April 18, WNEP host participated in Kids Education Day at the Wilkes-Barre Settlement Camp.
April 19, 2004; WNEP personality was guest speaker at the Tobyhanna Army Depot luncheon. The event paid tribute to volunteers in the Depot.
April 21, 2004; Meteorologist attended Career Day at Wyalusing Valley High School.
April 22, 2004; WNEP personality was guest speaker at Pennsylvania Power & Light in Scranton for Bring Your Kids to Work Day.
April 24, 2004; Meteorologist gave a tour of WNEP to Brownie Troop #3965.
April 29, 2004; WNEP’s Yellowjackets played against Pittston Area High. It was their Family Fun Night fundraiser.
Month of May 2004; WNEP’s Skycam 16 (helicopter) visited schools throughout the viewing area. Skycam captain and flight producer landed at or around the schools and answered questions from the students. The schools visited follow.

May 15, 2004; Several WNEP personnel participated in the Relay for Life at the Bloomsburg Fair where one of our anchors was Grand Marshall.
May 16, 2004; WNEP personnel attended an “Evening of Fine Food & Wine” in Scranton. Proceeds from the event benefit the Scranton Cultural Center.
May 20, 2004; Several WNEP personnel, both on and off air, attended a Girl Scout Breakfast in Wilkes-Barre.
May 22, 2004; Anchor served as celebrity speaker at a state gathering of Lions Club members at the Radisson in Scranton.
May 23, 2004; Anchor was the celebrity co-chair and gave a speech at the gala and art auction to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association. Several other WNEP personnel attended the event.

April 26, 2004; Several WNEP personnel, including on-air, attended the Boys & Girls Champion of Youth Dinner in Dickson City where Pat O’Brien was the key speaker.
April 26, 2004; WNEP anchor was live on the air of Froggy 101 radio station. A listener of the station got to pick any local celebrity they’d like to meet and chose our morning anchor. They were introduced over the air.
May 22, 2004; WNEP anchor was the celebrity speaker at a state gathering of Lions Club members during a breakfast at the Radisson in Scranton. Her speech focused on stimulating volunteerism in the community and how to maintain volunteers once they come aboard.
May 23, 2004; WNEP anchor was celebrity co-chair and speaker at a gala and art auction to 100 people at Patsel’s Restaurant in Glenburn, Lackawanna County. The proceeds from the event benefit the Alzheimer’s Association.
May 25, 2004; WNEP anchor was featured speaker at the DARE graduation in South Abington Township park to honor the students in the Abington Heights School district who have completed the program where they say no to drugs ad alcohol.
August 26, 2004; Reporter participated in Women’s Equality Day at the Veteran’s Hospital, Wilkes-Barre Township.
August 27, 2004; WNEP personnel participated in the Race for the Cure reception at the Mall at Steamtown, Scranton.
August 28, 2004; Reporter participated in the Child Advocacy Walk in Scranton.
August 29, 2004; Several on-air personalities were readers for storytelling at Penn State Campus in Lehman.

November 2004; WNEP’s Feed a Friend Program helped feed 40,536 people and collected $116,00 for needy families for Thanksgiving.
November 5, 2004; Meteorologist paid a visit to the 6th & 7th grade classes at the Solomon Jr. High School in Wilkes-Barre to talk about weather.
November 8, 2004; Reporter participated in the Gallery of Hope in Williamsport.
November 11, 2004; Meteorologist visited two schools in the Williamsport area to talk about weather.
November 13, 2004; Meteorologist gave a tour of WNEP to a group of scouts.
